    8GB of ram... ?

    Just a quick question this..

When I bought this new MESH PC, it came with 8gigs of ram for free. Now, I know Vista Home Premium 32bit can only use 4GB, so I have heard, but under the "System" tab it reports 8.00 GB of ram.

My PC is generally stable, but when I boot up I very occasionally run into problems; not getting past the windows Vista green bar screen, or a black screen and no loading - Always fixed by a reset.

Was just wondering if removing 2 of the sticks would be beneficial in any way or shall I just leave it?

If it is worth doing at all, what would the reasons be? Thanks!

This annoys me, big computer manufacturers, being stupid.

You can pay for 8 but use 3.5

    It's 4.98*

3.25 or less with bigger cards
And yeah it's still annoying as you will still see manufacturers doing this today, although not as largely as before.

I have 512mb on the GPU so I assume its 3.25GB ram being used. Shall I just leave all 8 in there?

Well if you aren't going to use it it'd save a bit of power, and yes 3.25 is the norm for a 512mb GPU card. I suppose you could sell the other 4 gig to pay for Vista x64
It'll still benefit you using that 0.75GB

Well if your system can only make use of 3.5 (or 3.25 or what ever it is!) then you may aswell leave 4 GB in and either use the other 4 in another system or sell them.

    edit: ok beaten to it

    Re: 8GB of ram... ?

Do not sell the extra 4gb of ram!! If there is a problem with your pc your warranty would be invalid if they found only 4gb in your computer. I would personally just remove the extra 4gb and keep it as spare!!

Oh yes, if it's still in warranty. Otherwise after 1 year unless you've paid for more warranty sell it off. It is 1 year warranty with pre-built systems right?

Do you know anyone with a 64bit Vista installation disk?

You may be able to reinstall the OS as 64bit using the borrowed disk and your Original Product key on the Mesh PC. Then all 8gb would be at your mercy!

I am led to believe that Vista Product Keys aren't tied to either 32 or 64 bit versions of the OS as when you buy Vista retail you get both versions but only one product key.

You would need the 64bit drivers for the mobo but these should be available on the Mesh site.

That's correct. The key just identifies what version of vista you have. The 32 and 64 bit media are inter-changeable.

I haven't personally done an OEM 32>64bit update (in fact, I have never installed or even used 32bit Vista!) but I have seen others on these forums mention that it's fine to do.

This would indeed work. Unless you have an OEM copy that relies on a BIOS table to authenticate the key. Or instances where you have just a system restore partition. But if you just have a key and a disk, using any x64 disk will work fine.

BTW it will show all 8gb in system properties bvut it will not use it all. I highly reccomend you upgrade to x64, (there are)I have had no issues with it now.
EDIT: Clearly I post things whilst half asleep.

I thought that only applies to the retail version though, hence having to specify when ordering OEM.
