Recommend me a CPU HSF please
HI all, i placed an order for the Xigmatek 120 HDT-S1283 last week through scan, however somewhere between the order being placed and 1 day later it went out of stock (too popular?).
Calling the lovely woman on the phone earlier confirmed no due date, and since i'm moving house in 4 days i can't just let the order sit and wait, so i've had to cancel it.
So what options do i have?
a) use the stock intel cooler until the Xigmatek comes back into stock again, waiting weeks (or months?)
b) order something else
By the way it's for an Intel Q6600 which i will be wanting to overclock, although not break any records.
I'd consider £15 to be a good price, £20 fair, and if it's really worth it £25, although i can feel a "Bah humbug" coming on already.
Muchas gracias!

Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
Right, thanks to the lovely Scan telephone team that is now on order for hopefully delivery tomorrow.
I'll let you know how it performs :)
PS: £10.21 !! I'd consider that a serious bargain.
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
Only according to hexus though, other reviews place the xigmatek well above it
One thing I will note on the hexus review, did you see how much thermal paste they used? :O_o1:
not surpised at the bad resaults compaired to the coolers with pre-applied paste
Not saying the akasa ak965x3 is a bad cooler, it's very good esp for the price, I'm not sure how well it'll cope with a q6600 overclock though.
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
MSIC I've had the exact same issue... We should form a group and hunt down some Xigmatek's :). Rang up this morning and ordered the Akasa instead, Just hope Hexus was right. Guess we'll find out tomorrow
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
Check out the Xigmatek 964, Achilles and Red Scorpion, all great coolers.
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
Thanks Clunk...do you work for Xigmatek or something ? :)
Seriously though, thanks, but my order has now been placed. Still, if i find that the Akasa isn't to my liking, i'll not be backwards about letting everyone know.
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
Nah, just had a few in for review. I think that they are probably the best bang for buck at the moment and they are also very quiet as well.
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
How do these compare to an Akasa AK-966? For £24 it's not a value cooler but it's not expensive either and it seems to give good temperatures and low noise.
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
Hmm just seen the linked post with the comparisons to the AK-965. I would guess therefore that the 966 is likely to be an improvement again... and it shines blue, yay *adds to shopping basket*
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
Take the Hexus results with a healthy pinch of salt, a lot of other review sites have not shown it so favourably against the Xigmatek or more to the point the Xigmatek has performed better in other tests, take Clunks reviews fro example. Remember with all things cooling one bad mount and it can ruin the results.

Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
I would have thought that it depends upon your usage. If you game or fold for long periods of time then you'll want a HSF that gives you lower temps at load. If you have a small form factor case or if you run your fans at low airflow to keep them quiet then ambient temps will be an important factor.
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
I have the Xigmatek 120mm HSF, and its a bloody good cooler if you dont mind a terribly fiddly installation (well, its easy enough until the fan rubber mounts, which are a pain the the rear)
Re: Recommend me a CPU HSF please
I seem to remember that the reviews of the HDT-964 where ok but not spectaular, the Akasa 965x3 is going to perform around the same level and is cheaper
the original Xigmatek HDT-S1283 was well reviewd, these two new versions look nice, the red scorpion seems to be the same but with nickel(?) plated heat pipes and an LED fan
the Achilles looks the best, with 4 heat pipes which are offset.
Must say just from the pics the fans look a rather cheap :(
Real shame the Scythe Mine seems to have dissapeared that was a great cooler for the £20ish it cost and very simple to change the fan.
Clunk are you going to be looking at any p43 board in the near future? *nudge* *nudge*

I didn't do the 964 review, those room temps would have killed me :D Two different CPUs and boards,
If I was going to recommend one of them, I would say the standard S1283 represents the best value for money for most people and the 964 while great, is a little bit noisier due to the 92mm fan, but only by a whisker.

Not that I know of, sorry :)
