    serial cable question

i need a 9 pin female to female cable to hook my nas to my UPS, are all 9 pin rs232's the same as a lot seem to be badged as null modem, it needs to have all 9 pins connected and im not sure if i can get a null modem as they come in the 10m length i need as the UPS is in the loft ?

    Sadly not.

Even "null modem" cables were not covered by a standard so you can get different ones. They usually have wires crossed in them (think of cross-over RJ45 cables).

Non "null modem" cables are normally straight through cables.

You need to check the manuals / spec sheets to fine out what you need

    Re: serial cable question

RS232 Pin Assignments (DB9 PC signal set)
Pin 1 Received Line Signal Detector (Data Carrier Detect)
    Pin 2 Received Data
    Pin 3 Transmit Data
    Pin 4 Data Terminal Ready
    Pin 5 Signal Ground
    Pin 6 Data Set Ready
    Pin 7 Request To Send
    Pin 8 Clear To Send
    Pin 9 Ring Indicator

if thats the pc side, and the diagram above is the UPS then it seems to be a straight through cable after all, not a null modem. so a straight forward extension cable should do the trick ?
