I used to use a Thermalright SLK-900 or something like that on my old P4 system, all copper heatsink which bolted in place with a 92mm delta fan that had been 7v modded.
that's the exact same one as my girlfriend has, the old stock cooler bugged the heck out of me so I replaced it with a Scythe SAMURAI-Z Rev.B because it was very cheap at the time, it keeps the temps under control and is very quiet :)
Have a look here

tells you which ones work with which CPUs and also how eficient they are
Any good multi socket cooler will work (as long as it comes with 478 brackets)
One thing I would mention before you go out a get a BIG cooler is check the case size, I'm guessing it's an older 2nd hand system (I hope you didn't buy that new) and one major difference that has occured to cases over the past few years is that cases have got wider and as such a new tall cooler will not fit.
The change has been from 170-180mm wide to 200-210mm wide which alows for 120mm rear case fans. (and the current BIG coolers)
While a p4 3ghz is old tech now, it'll still run well, my GF still happly runs internet and photoshop on her socket478 p4 3ghz.
I just hope you got it dirt cheap as the "pentium dual core" (e2xxx) are very cheap and are faster.
Scythe is probably your best bet as they still supply 478 brackets with there coolers
the Scythe Katana 2 or Scythe Kamaboko Z are around £20 and will be fine. :)
The Gigabyte G-Power coolers are around £14-15 and have 478 brackets (but I don't know what there fans are like)
There are quite a few which are basically the same as the stock cooler but with a thick copper base and a larger 70mm fan on top, eg Akasa AK-687a
They'll work but not sure how much of an improvement they'll be over the stock cooler.
Almost forgot the old Zlaman Areo flowers they are 478 compatible
Thanks for the info guys, has really helped.
My brother bought the processor for me as i was building 1 pc out of 3 older ones, havent bought any other new stuff for it. Think the processor was about 40 quid. Its more for the experience of building one than anything to help with a course im doing. Im just patching the few bits together now. Finished it last night except for this fan and didnt cost me a penny lol.
The case i have is an older ATX but its massive, loads of room inside.
Thx again
