Shame it's rubbish for gaming
So we're all fine sticking with our pentium 4s and X2?
Interesting that the top current S775 chips aren't far behind them, in fact the QX cpus are closer to the i7 cpus, then the quad core Phenom is to the QX's

16 cores?
and why do the Phenom's absolutely suck?
I thought i7 was supposed to go to 8 cores but also has hyper-threading, which would show as 16 CPUs to an OS.

shame they didn't leak gaming benchmarks cause really... 3d mark is much much more important !
well im a n open minded person and i would get core 2 if i knew for sure that it can last me 3 years at least playing the top end games at 1080p res by just upgrading the GPU once in a while.
im just worried that core 2 cpu's may hold back the next gen gpu cards such has ati 5870? nv 380gtx?
also cs5, windows 7 and any post 2009/2010 software may run better and faster on a i7. its all about thinking about tomorrow, not today
I doubt you will see much benefit on Windows 7, its basically a slightly tweaked Vista.
The other things you mention may well give considerably better results though.
The only reason I upgraded 2 months ago was pricing and compatibility. Core2 stuff is really cheap compared to how much i7 stuff will cost.....Add that to all the issues that seems to come with first generation kit and it seemed worthwhile to buy Core2 today and wait 6-12 months for i7.
If Intels past track record is anything to go by, your first i7 motherboard will be useless for any CPU upgrades you might do in the future......
Twice I've jumped on new hardware platforms for future-proofing, both times it bit me in the ass.

I would much rather worry about today today and tomorrow when it gets here!
Nobody knows what will be the state of play in a year so the is no sure fire way to say buy this and it will last you 5 years. Much better to buy what you need now and then upgrade as and when required than trying to predict the unpredictable.
With that in mind my suggestions to people will always be buy middle of the road, to give you adequate performance. Take the following anelogy you buy a Q6600 and a HD4870 (costs you £300) or you could buy a Q9650 and a HD4870X2 (costs you £750) now the is no doubt the more expensive system will give you better performance today, but in a year you can upgrade the CPU and GPU if required to the middle of the range then say for £450 so now your total outlay is the same as the expensive system what is the betting that your new mid-range system is now better than the ageing top of the range system from a year ago? And you may not need to upgrade the CPU you may just need a new graphics card at which point the savings are increased yet further.
What happened when you did buy stuff right from the get go? right now, i have over £700+ and i could buy a core 2 system now. whats stopping me is the regret that if i buy now, this time next year when the next gen gpu cards come out, my beloved quad core q6600 etch will be holding it back and requires me to buy a nehalem
Assuming that you upgrade on release you can expect CPU to cost £250+, Motherboard £200+ and DDR3 3GB £100+ and 6GB £200+ so for £650 will get you your motherboard, CPU and memory assuming you need a graphics update as well that doesn't leave an awful lot and in a year your CPU may still not be good enough.
Not exactly sure what you think is going to happen over the next year which is going to move games CPU bound though. Especially if your looking at a Q6600 with a decent overclock.
I'm not sure what that picture's showing to be honest - looks like 4x nehalem dice, maybe representing a 4 socket system.
But by a different company. Via's latest chip is barely as fast as a 1.3ghz celeron, despite being very recentthat's what i meant.. they absolutely suck compared to the Core 2s. but they were released much later.
The time AMD have spent on it has made it faster than their older products certainly, but you can't always catch up to the competition just by waiting longer.
