Power Supply Quick Advice

I'm in the market for a new PSU, I've got a fairly respectable PC spec, but I feel my Hiper Type-R [which got rave reviews when it first was released] is feeling a bit tired, and especially with reports of them randomly giving up the ghost I'd like to change sooner rather than later.

My spec [In a Sugo SG01e SFF case]
Intel E4500 with NT06 HS
Abit I-N73HD
2Gb Ram
3850 Pro 512MbPCI-e
Creative XFI
2 x DVD Rewriters
2 x 500Gb Samsung [Sata]

I know both of these power supplies are suitable and powerful enough for my system but which should last the longest, which has the best reputation, and are there others that could do even better for my budget (£80 new/used) - modular preferred

Tagan (Nanopoint) Piperock 800W
Enermax Infiniti 650/720W ...

Also what impact would a 13.5cm fan have rather than a 12cm fan above my NT06 cooler, it will nodoubt have a larger dead-zone but would this affect my CPU cooling at all [Silverstone NT06 sits directly underneath the PSU to use the PSU's fan to draw air from the heatsink]

Yeah, I had a Hiper Type-R 580 watt. Absolute rubbish it turned out, apart from the nice connectors. Mine used to squeal like a pig if you drew above 200 Watts from it.

Those PSUs look like total wattage overkill to me - I doubt you'd need more than a good 300 Watt PSU, if such things still existed.

Silent PC review has a good shortlist of excellent PSUs. The Enermax Modu82+ 625 Watt being their current favourite on quietness + quality.

I would recommend the corsair PSU's as these are also getting rave reviews and have a nice long warranty period.

Even though its modular, the PSU has nice black flat cables for easier routing

Yup the Corsair PSUs are good. I've got the HX 520 Watt one.

HX620 here and i never hear a peep out of it.. even with everything at full tilt.
got good reviews aswell.
the 520 would probably be better though, seeing as it's identical apart from the 100w less.

They do, notice most hardcore enthusiasts use their PSU's when doing those crazy overclocks as they provide very stable voltages. Enermax are up there with them too as they're great on efficiencies and they have a UK base iirc.

With what you have a decent 450w-500w PSU is all you should need

Corsair VX450w (non-modular) or HX520w (modular)
Seasonic M12II-500 (although this is basically the same as the corsair HX520w but slightly more expensive)
Enermax MODU82+ 525w (modular) or 425w (should still be enought)
Be Quiet Dark Power PRO 450w (modular, but I seem to remember they are slightly noisey)
Silverstone ST50EF-Plus-SC 500w (non-modular)
Antec EarthWatts 430W (non-modular, basic looking but a good unit)
Antec NeoPower 430W (modular, basic looking but a good unit)

Tagan are suposed to be good psu's and they don't over rate there numbers

I've heard all the rave reviews about the corsairs at the moment, i've just been waiting for a special offer or a lower price, but it hasn't been so easy to come by

Will investigate the others, but I want a decent 500W PSU to allow for future use aswell.

The new Be Quiet Dark Power PROs aren't as noisy anymore - I've been thinking about buying the 550W model. I can also recommend the Coolermaster Silent Pro series - a friend bought the 500W version recently and despite its super quiet running its been fully stable at load and according to reviews has good efficiency too.

One thing I should mention is that so far the revies of psu's with 135mm/140mm fans have not been great.
So far they seem to be noiser than 120mm fan psu's

As much as I hate to agree with Blitzen (we love you really) it seems the reviews of the Enermax MODU82+ agree that it's the best.

Having crowned a new silent PSU king, it's prudent to point out that in a competition among the best in any category, whether Olympic athletes or high performance computer power supplies, the differences between first, second and third place (and even lower ranks) are often marginal. With swimmers, runners, and skiers, it's sometimes measured in hundredths of a second. Similarly with quiet, high performance PSUs, a number of Seasonic and Corsair models come within 1~2 dBA@1m of the Modu82+ 625's default acoustics, and their electrical performance is close enough to be considered identical. In practical usage, the noise advantage between this PSU and some of the other top ranked quiet models may not even be audible because of the masking effects of other louder noise sources, either in the computer or in the environment. The noise advantage will also be insignificant if you're going to run this (or any other) PSU above the "hinge" point of the noise/load curve; once this point is exceeded, the differences between the various top models becomes truly moot — basically they all get too loud to be called "silent".

In most cases (although not all e.g. very high wattages) the PSU review will give a good indication as to other wattage PSUs available for the same model.

Take a little look at the Enermax reviews aswell.
They are getting amazing reviews. Even the reviews have nothing bad to say about them.

Corsair = Good
Enermax = Better

I have a corsair HX620 and it doesnt have the guts to power my GTX280OC properly - when things get tough it squeals and then the card hiccups

I bought a single rail PSU instead.
