Does this PSU seem sufficient for this build?
Guys,
despite i7 coming round the corner, thought that it was time for me to move from my old 939 system in my sig, to a Core 2 system. I'm trying to keep what I can, which, is just 8800GTS 512, 24" monitor, KB/M, and speakers... but wondering about my PSU...
This is what i intend to get:
Case: Antec 300
Mobo: Asus P5Q Deluxe
CPU: Q6600
RAM: Corsair XMS 4GB 6400 C5
HDD: Samsung 750GB F1
Optical: Samsung SH-S223F
HSF: Thermalright Extreme
The PSU I have it a Hiper Type M HPU-4M580, which is rated at 580w & peak load of 630w:

I dont really know enough about PSUs/Rails/Amps etc, but I know that it could affect the potential OC of the system due to power stability. Just wondering if you think that this PSU could handle the above, with a moderatelu OC Q6600, lets say to 3ghz or so.
I'd rather not need to splash out on a new PSU until I upgrade to a better PSU, but if its going to hold me back then theres no choice really.
Oh and one last thing, as I am new to C2D - this PSU has one 8-pin connector. Is this just for the motherboard, or is it the same as the 8-pin that needs to go onto new GPUs? Because there is only one on this PSU - just curious.
Thanks so much for any help
JP

NO not hiper power. Bye Bye pc, - pop.
Little carried away then:O
You would be much better off with something like this:
Corsair HX 520 for modula
or this
Corsair VX 550 (not modula)
or
corsair VX 450not modula

Half correct, there was a problem with some batches of the hiper 580w psu's but for some reason everyone has gotten it into their heads that all hiper psu's blow up.
I have a 580w hiper thats been running for over a year with no problems and very stable voltage outputs.
Plus i think the OP already has the hiper psu.

Yes - just to clear up - if i was building from total scratch, i would definitely get a Corsair or Seasonic, but it seems a shame to spend more unless it really going to limit overclocking. I dont have the modular one, trying to find out if the bad batch were just the Type R ones.
I have had it for well over a year now, and its been fine, but then again, i havent been overclocking that much - just a mild one on my X2...
Re: Does this PSU seem sufficient for this build?
Yes i believe it was the type R's which is what i have (now in my daughters system) but it was only some batches of the type R's not all of them and mine has been in two systems both over clocked.
I only changed to my present Thermaltake 750w because i am now running two 8800gts but even then i know of a guy running the same 8800gt's in SLi with a 580w type r.

I can only speak from my experience, but my Hiper collapsed after 12 months of 24/7 overclocking. If yours is switched off a lot, or you don't OC, then you may not have reached the blow point yet. More to the point though, when I replaced the Hiper, a lot of little niggles that I had been experiencing (like an occasional crash) just disappeared.
