Desktop to Laptop - Advice?

Hey everyone,

Your opinions please I have a decent desktop machine (see my system tab) and im thinking of getting a laptop. To be honest, I very rarely game on my pc as I tend to use the PS3 for that kinda stuff, its generally a music/email/web station that is taking up far too much space the way things are so im considering getting myself a lappy.

The question is, how much would I get for my system if I was to split it? Or is it worth holding out for a full system sale (it is nearly xmas after all). The system comes with Vista Home Premium (which I bought in April).

It is a nice enough spec but I doubt it's worth much now, well not to anyone in the know anyway.

£250 maybe? Maybe a bit more with the OS.

The hiper PSU will put people off though.

The laptop idea is good though, it's what I use most days now. Quiet and plenty quick enough for day to day stuff, even a bit of gaming.

I had a laptop, then i bought a monitor cause it was too small to do any real work on. Then i bought a keyboard cause it was so cramped to type on. Then....I bought a desktop cause well, it doesn't play games well enough.

Now that I have both, I think they do complement each other seeing how you get best of both worlds

I just this week bought (and am currently typing on) a Samsung NC10. It's perfect for word processing and surfing but cheap enough for me not to have to consider selling my beloved desktop.

I have to agree there actually, I had a play with one today and it's such a great little laptop. If you have a monitor and keyboard to plug into it.. it's great. But if you are doing that you might as well save £100 and buy an acer one lol (if you have your own OS).

What should I look out for in graphics cards on them then? I know very little about laptop gaming and entertainment capabilities, ive always been a desktop kinda guy.

I keep seeing the nvidia 8400M or GS, the 9000 series M or GS and the ATI 3450 and 3650. What should I avoid?

the 8400M GS is very slow on Vista at least on my dell laptop, scrolling through scrollbars or just dragging files over is far from the usual fluid feel you get with desktop graphics. Driver updates break the fan speed on these as well. I'm extremely vexed tbh with mobile nvidia graphics.

Try putting it into high power mode if it's not already. In low power mine is like that.. in high power it's a smooth pimp daddy.

I've got three laptops in front of me, NV 8400GS, Intel X3100 and ATI X1100 all running Vista with areo. All of em have no problems in Areo what so ever when scrolling or dragging windows. Areo is a drain on battery life anyway, I always have it off.

I thought about getting shot of my PC aswell in favour of my laptops.
Decided against it though...i lurrrrve my desktop.

Laptops are plenty quick enough though: Dell Latitude D630 & Dell Latitude D600
The D630 plays BF2 on medium settings so quite happy.
