S939 AMD CPU - One last upgrade of the old beast
I've got an AMD S939 Opteron system with 250 MHz capable OC memory and a 8800GT all running on a AN8 Fatality SLI board.
I don't see the point in upgrading my rig for what I do (surfing and gaming) when I am saving up for a....MacBook....to do all my day-to-day computing and keep my PC for gaming and the kids to surf on.
What I DO fancy doing is replacing my Opty 144 which currently runs at 2.5GHz with a beefier CPU to give it some welly and some final legs.
Any thoughts?

Getting a decent dual core will cost you £50+. If you sell your current cpu/mobo/ram you will get at least £50. Then buy 2gb ddr2 for £20, e2xxx for £30 and s775 mobo for £50. Job done. Better upgrade
Re: S939 AMD CPU - One last upgrade of the old beast
It's probably more cost effective in the long run to go for a cheap dual core cpu and overclock it, cheapish motherboard and DDR2 which is so cheap now it's almost a joke.
Unless of course you can find a 939 X2 4600/4800+ for not a lot, but I expect they are rare as hens teeth.
Re: S939 AMD CPU - One last upgrade of the old beast
dual core S939's are about as common as hen's teeth
just move on to core 2. i did and the performance was well worth the cost

One of them, yes. I posted about it on Hexus.classified when someone posted a 'wanted' but they didn't get back to me.

He should try it at least - though gaming sucks :p Hardware is so cheap these days that it really throws light on how much OS software is as part of the whole package. Retail version of Windows can easily cost more than the hardware cost of an entire computer :(

Yeah, I'm running a 4200 x2 on a 939. Does me fine.
Re: S939 AMD CPU - One last upgrade of the old beast
twin core 939 is a great upgrade from an Opty. I did it and it was good good good AND that PC is with a mate now and it plays really well on virtually everything, PLUS he can "Windows key" out of stuff and have a useable PC while game runs in background :)
Re: S939 AMD CPU - One last upgrade of the old beast
I've been pushing an X2 4200 for the last 18 months, and it's still going strong :)
Prior to that I had a 754 system, and there's quite a difference between single and dual core A64's in regard to gaming power, so if you aren't at all bothered by sinking cash into an obsolete machine (it doesn't sound like you are) then pick one up if you can find one for a price you're willing to pay, the late chips don't have much trouble reaching 2.7 or 2.8Ghz.

Yeah, I meant to say second hand ones for sale. I had a quick look for second hand ones cos it might interest my brother later this year but, they seem to be very thin on the ground. Maybe I need to increase my google skills.

I had this problem with what to do - running a x2 s939 4200 - but decided to upgrade to a core 2 duo, in fact i'm waiting for the city link van now with goodies from scan....
As already said by others, the problem was finding a top end 939 cpu cheap - wasn't going to happen!
