Semi Fanless PSU

I watched Hexus TVs quiet PC thingys today and saw they has some semi-fanless PSUs. The fans are switched off until the unit reaches a certain temperature/load then the fan spins up. Here is a few links to examples from their website.

You guys had any experience with anything like this or any genral thoughts?

As long as the fan doesn't switch on/off at the same temperature; it'd be fine. If it'd constantly be switching on/off that'd irritate the hell out of me. I wouldn't consider intermittent noise as better than constant, you can't get used to it.

IF you get a decent quiet PSU in the first place the is no need for semi-fanless, for example the Corsair HX520 I can not hear mine running unless my ear is basically in the fan and that small amount of noise is dampened further by having it in a case.

As cmjrees said if you happen to be at the temperature where it is constantly switching on and off and you can hear that it will be far more annoying than a constant low hum.

Mine is pretty quiet tbf i was just curious on what peoples thoughts where. I reckon they would be good for HTPCs.

The ones that cut in and out can be more annoying - get a decent quiet one like the Enermax Modu82+ or as already pointed out the Corsair HX series
