Silencing my Antec p182!!!
Hey guys need some advice!
I have an Antec P182 with the following setup.
C2D E6600 with stock cooling
nVidia Geforce 8600 GTS
1 seagate HDD
2gb ram
and i think thats it.
not it seems rather noisy in the P182, i did have an extra fan in there but i took it out as it was highly unnecessary. I wanted to know what could be the main cause of the noise. i have heard people say that sometimes they dont even notice that the PC is on whilst mine sounds pretty loud when its on.
I have some PSU which is not a good brand. bought it on a whim. Joujou 600W or something like.
now i want a PC that is as Silent as possible. any idea how i can decrease noise? i have the fans in the antec as low as possible :S
also was also thinking of upgrading a graphics card to play the cod5 in the latest graphics. can anyone suggest a card that will outperform the 8600 gts by loads but low in price??
thanks!

also a key note, i dont intend to overclock ... ever.!
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
Okay point 1 quiet cooling.
You probably will find most of the noise is from the PSU and then another healthy chunk from the CPU so your options are simple buy new PSU and a shiney new lump of metal for your CPU to love.
PSU the easy choice is a Corsair VX450 £49 and very quiet indeed if you want to spend a little more then the Enermax Pro82+ 425W is exceptionally quiet £52.
CPU cooling cheap but quiet calls for the Xigmatek S963 ~£15 or if you want to spend a bit more the S1283. If you have a bit more money to spend then the Thermalright Ultima 90 and the Scythe Ninja 2 are both very very good but will cost you ~£30.
Point 2 graphics.
Cheap graphics card for COD5 better than a 8600GTS, 9600GSO (you can get the XXX version for £65) 9600GT (Scan have one for £65) or the HD4670 (£60) I would probably go with the 9600GT assuming the cooler doesn't howl (which is a big assumption!) otherwise I would go for the 9600GSO XXX (nVidia cards have an advantage over ATi in COD at least at this price point)

Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
It might be worth looking at different case fans too, I'm a big flag waver for the 120mm Sharkoon 1000. :D

i actually have that fan already, i took it out. i think the case fans are actually ok. i looked at my PSU today and i notived that i currently have 3 fans "cooling it" i have the case face and the thing seems to draw and exhaust its own air flow. well since there is nothing wrong with the PSU atm other than the noise. i think i might just get a fan or heat sink for my CPU.
i heard a lot about the ninja scythe, are they really quiet? i guess the high heat sink means the fan can spin at lower speeds??
also guys, thanks for the replies!
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
With the tri-cools on low if the overall system is still noisy you will see more improvement from changing the CPU cooler and PSU, over changing case fans (unless their bearings are on the way out in which case they will be making a right racket!) of course nice quiet case fans (like the Sharkoon Golfball 1000) will make a difference but if they are not the cause of most of the noise then you may not appreciate the benefits.

If the PSU is the noisiest component then you will see less benefit from replacing the CPU cooler than you would otherwise.
But anyway yes the Ninja is a very quiet cooler you will not hear the fan over the rest of the components.
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
i am looking at the Ninja, and it looks pretty heavy! will the weight affect anything? because i have the mobo standing up?
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
Motherboards are hardier than you may imagine and the weight of the Ninja is fine even with a vertical orientation just make certain it is secure before standing the board up!
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
ahh haha, also sorry to ask so much, thought i may as well get it all out whilst i got the attention of a pro ;)
I use a paint brush (clean of course) to dust out my PC and use a fan (a piece of cardboard) to blow the dust out. will this affect anything, that face that i use a brush? all this crap about compressed air sounds silly to me.
I am also intending to clean out my graphics card. any tips? can i unscred the cover thing that is covering it all??
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
Is your graphics card still under warranty? If not then go for it and remove the cover (it really is the only way to clean the insides) if it is still under warranty and you don't wan to void it you can try poking inside with a length of wire (long cocktail stick perhaps) to try and free the dust up if it is clogged.

I use a paint brush too, to clean my case and components at times. Although Zak33 has posted about it saying that a stray bristle caused a short or damaged a component (can't remember) so make sure when you brush you don't leave any of those behind :)
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
I have the antec P182 with 1 Sharkoon 1000 as intake and 2 nexus 1200rpm as exhausts. Thinking about removing the top fan though, to cut down on noise.
Re: Silencing my Antec p182!!!
When I had a P182 I found the case fans very noisy even on low. Changed them all for Xilance red wings.
Noise was improved and temperatures inside the case dropped. :)
You could also try stopping the fans one at a time when they are running to find out which is making the most noise. This can be risky but as long as you only do it for a few seconds then you will not cause any damage.
BUT
Ensure the fans start back up after you have stopped them, don't put your fingers in the fan (blood is so hard to get off) and ensure you don't snap off any of the fan blades. Best to go for the center of the fan and apply pressure with the rubber end of a pencil.
