Hey guys,
Just a quick Q - The Samsung or the Western Digital which are both on today only.
I ask because I know from reading around that the Samsung ones have a high failure rate. So I just wanted some clarification for my choice.
Thanks

Samsung is the fastest, WD green is the coolest/quietest.
The Sammys are still quiet though, I have 4 of them in a raid enclosure and a few stand-alone hard drives in the case drown the sound of them out.
I have both :) But I know what you mean about the Samsung's faiure rate, plus shorter warranty periond (iirc). I'd opt for the WD personally, for peace of mind.
A few people have mentioned high failure rate, I've yet to see any proof though....and if you believe all what you hear about HDD failure rates on the net without evidence, then you wouldn't buy ANY hard drives....
Like I said, I have 4 in a raid enclosure, yet none have failed and that's probably the harshest environment you likely to run them in........
Both are 3years warranty as well.......
Hmmm, you raise a fair point. But then again buying with an informed decision is taking on board what you read on the net!
However it would make sense to give them both an equal chance. But I'm not sure which one!
TBH buy the cheapest out of the 2, Samsung drives tend to be cheaper so more people buy which is why the failure rate is recorded much more often than others. Same length warranty and Samsung are meant to be quiet anyway, both similar.
Completely agree, the only HDD i have had completely fail was a seagate barracuda. My maxtor has teetered on the edge of failure (started going very slowly and making some very loud mechanical noises) but seems fine now :/ I personally prefer WD drives though, always have.
Depends what you're using the drive for but as shaithis said, the Samsung is quite a bit quicker while the WD is less power hungry.
I opted for the F1 and am yet to regret it.
EDIT: If you do want a 1TB WD drive, go with the Caviar Black.
yeh the green WD's are the eco ones which only spin at 5200 or something. would probably mean longer life and bit quieter but annoyingly slow
blue or black are more aimed at non-office ppl
I went for the Samsungs (2 x 500GB RAID 0) over the WD's and i am glad i did.
They are noticeably quicker than any drive i have had before.
I've had two Samsung drives fail, although I'm still using them because they seem so fast and get such good reviews. It is a pain though, I hadn't ever experienced a hard drive failure in many years of Seagate and Western Digital drives.
*touchwood* my samsung hasn't failed - yet, but it is very fast, I'd recommend it :)
I have sold quite a few systems with Samsung drives. We have had a few failures, normally after 1-2 years. The Worst case was a system we built with 2 samsungs and both drives failed within 2 weeks.
Oddly we are now moving over to WD so will see how they perform. Only time will tell.
