    PC Case Position

Just wondering if its safe to put my pc case this close to a wall. I'm currently using a Dell E520 case (not the best but will upgrade to Coolmaster CM-690 soon ) and it currently sits ontop of my desk but i want a bigger monitor so it needs to be moved. I'm going to move it to down in the corner and i want to know if it will be safe to put either case there. Don't want to stuff to overheat (espically as once i get the coolmaster i will be overclocking ). Basically its going to have 33mm on either side of the case with 80mm at the back. The front will be unrestricted. If you really want i can post a pic but i hope i don't need to.

    Re: PC Case Position

Sounds good, mine is under my desk at the moment but has a bit more clearence which are 5cm one side, loads on the other(next to me so plenty) and about 12cm at the back, mines an open desk so its ok. Is yours one of them computer compartment things? i know my older case was cooler outside of them but with 3cm either side and 8 behind it should be fine.

    Re: PC Case Position

you can always flip the PSU so the fan is facing upwards, CM690 has compatible holes to do that.

If i was to do that though wouldn't the psu be having lots of hot air from the 8800gt going through it. But then it could be used for dragging that air out though.

Could also starve the gpu of air, had a system blower in my case once and temps rose by a bad 10c+

    Re: PC Case Position

Umm as far as I'm aware the dell E520 has the psu at the top of the case and the main air intake is at the front half way up
    this is the case correct?

and this is the main air intake

Sticking it on the floor is not going to be any major problem, I would stick a board/plank of wood under it to raise it slightly if you have carpet (it will help keep it flat and level) will also make it eaiser to move about when you vacume.

Thats the case i have at the moment but i'm talking about when i get my new one. Coolmaster CM690.
I'll probaly stick the psu facing downwards with a plank of wood to keep it flat and to avoid fluff getting into the psu.

not really, majority of the hot air from the 8800GT is heading upwards, and PSUs generally do not have high airflow fans and it wouldn't steal air from the gfx card fan.

At worst its taking in warmer case air but still far better than a top mounted PSU since that sucks in all the hot air rising from the CPU, motherboard and GFX card.

I assume then that in the Cm690 when i install a case fan in the top i want it taking air out.

You will not be able too unless you're doing more than replaceing the case.
Thoes dell motherboards are non-standard and will not fit in anything other than thoes dell cases.

It is going to be a complete overhaul. The only things that are going to come across are my 8800GT and HX620. Everything else will be new.

    Re: PC Case Position

I'd keep the Hard drive and probably the dvd (if it's a DVDr/w)

For the CM690 the basic set up is 1 fan at the front (in front of the hard drive bay) drawing air in
1 fan on the lower side panel slot, drawing air in (will blow over the graphics card)
1 fan at the back, sucking air out
2 fans at the top sucking air out
80mm fan behind the motherboard optional.
PSU fan mounted down, to draw in air cool from below the case

Don't bother with the upper side panel fan, if you have a large cooler it will not fit (any tower design with 120mm fan)
Don't bother with the bottom fan if you have fans sucking air out then air will get pulled into the case from any vent, the only real reason for input fans is to focus air flow over hot components that need the extra air flow and that bottom fan points at nothing.

You may want to consider the cm690 with window there are two versions
Standard, with the normal blue led fan at the front and a clear window in the side panel
    http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/cust...productid=6911
nvidia styled, Green LED fan at the front, a green window in the side panel, green details and an nvidia badge on the front

    Re: PC Case Position

Just keep the case a few inches from the wall and all will be fine.

I made a wooden plinth for my case which keeps it off of the carpet and i can slide it out when i need to access it.
