Hi all,
After reading the i7 reviews, there's no point of upgrading from a Q6600 @ 2800. I do, however want to upgrade my motherboard. I currently have a Gigabyte 965P DS3.
I just want a newer chipset as mine can't cope with my quad at 3.2 and it cannot cope with all memory banks being full!
Any recommendations?
The 965 chipset should be able to cope with a q6600 @ 3.2
It could be your memory that's holding you back or you've got a cpu that just will not go that high (it happens)
If you do want to replace your motherboard then generally the best step is a full reinstall of OS after you've changed it.
You can get away without an OS reinstall but it's often not adviseable and can cause a lot of issues. (assumeing you're running windows, not sure what Linux is like for a motherboard swap)

Depends how much you want to spend really a nice P35 will stand you in good stead, or you could move up to P45 if you fancy the newer southbridge, and PCIe 2 support (oh and crossfire).
Look at the DFI DK range for both chipsets and the Asus P5Q range for P45 the P5Q-Pro is being well received. These will cost £75+ if that is too much then we will have to have a rethink.
Hmm - aslong as the board's good for overclocking and can cope with 4*2gb sticks then it's all good.
P5Q-Pro is an absolutely awesome board, loads better than my P35.
overclocks to the same values on less volts than my IP35 did aswell :)
quite expensive though, so if you're on a budget, maybe not..
I usually find Linux is really good at handling motherboard swaps, as long as the new motherboard is supported of course but that is another problem :)Quote:
