Hardware prices in Hong Kong
Don't suppose anybody knows what hardware prices in Hong Kong are like? Currently looking for a new graphics card. I wasn't planning on getting the card until I got back, but guess it might be worth a look round, hoping they are are similar to US prices rather than UK (which has bombed vs. HKD). Then I could be looking at a GTX260 instead of a HD4850/9800GTX
Purpose of the trip is to party, not gadget shop, so won't really be on the lookout unless somebody can tell me it is worthwhile taking the time to look.
Cheers,
Dave
Re: Hardware prices in Hong Kong
A GTX260 will cost you 2190 HKD, which is about 180 GBP.
So if you can get one, get one :D
Don't know about Tax and stuff, but still cheaper then here.
Re: Hardware prices in Hong Kong
Bear in mind that you will have to declare it and pay tax if it cost more than ~£150, and I think any RAM could be fiddly... :P
Re: Hardware prices in Hong Kong
Forget my 1st post.
It is actually more expensive then here.
Re: Hardware prices in Hong Kong
Unless you can get an international warranty I would not buy from abroad. If the card is DOA you have essentially lost all of your money!!
Re: Hardware prices in Hong Kong
I was there in late Sept-early Oct. I had a look at some of the computer hardware stores and tbh I thought the pricing for consumer electronics was not far off UK pricing! I didn't see that many bargains, especially when you start thinking about warranty coverage etc.
TBH some of the shadier hardware stores/stalls in the shopping centers have moved away from Hong Kong island, as there has been an effort on the authorities' part to reduce counterfeit goods selling.
I strolled around the 298 Computer Center on Hennessy Road (Wan Chai) and while they had pretty much everything you could ever wish to look for, the stalls selling brand new/non-refurbished goods weren't exceptional bargains. It was a pretty cool store though - reminded me of a massive computer fair, but based in a scruffy vertical department store. Also we were there with a native speaker, although in general understanding of English was pretty good on HK island.
You might be able to find more bargains out in the Tsim Tsha Tsui area, on the mainland, but expect more hassle and less English if you try to barter. Also you'll get people trying to sell you counterfeit watches or suits about every 50 metres :surprised:
If, on the other hand, you're there to party... you'll have a fantastic time!

For your reference :)
Hardware price in Hong Kong might occasionally cheaper than in UK, particularly with small items like ram and flash memory. Graphics card to a certain extent, but the top-end products are usually more expensive (actually less people than UK could afford those).
Consider the pound went down significantly lately, you'll see Hong Kong's product is going to be more expensive than usual (HKD is linked to USD).
