    MDADM Chaos!

    alright,

I'm trying to create a software RAID 5 volume using mdadm.

    I'm running debian 2.6.18-6-486.

I created the RAID array and got everything working according to this guide.

I rebooted the machine to check that the RAID would stick and it didn't.

    I received the
    Code:
fsck.ext3: Invalid argument while trying to open /dev/md0
message and it bumped me into a maintenance shell after entering the root password.

Running mdadm --detail /dev/md0 yields this:

From the maintenance shell if i run
    Code:
    ls /dev/sd(double tab)
The drives sdb and sdc have their respective partitions sd*1 but sdd is by itself.

    Using
    Code:
    fdisk /dev/sdd
I check the partition table, and there is a partition there /dev/sdd1. Upon writing the partition and exiting fdisk, it appears under /dev/sdd1.

    Cue
    Code:
    mdadm --stop /dev/md0
    followed by
    Code:
    mdadm -A /dev/md0
and I get a fully assembled RAID again.

I've added the libata and sata_nv lines to the /etc/modules file, but cant figure out what else to do!

    Cheers,
    Steve

This isn't something I have done myself but two possibilities spring to mind. One is that you aren't rebooting after making the partitions to be added to the array. The Kernel uses the existing partition table until a reboot (a fact that saved my life when I accidentally deleted a partition - but noticed before I rebooted so I could copy the data to another disk!)

The second is a possible problem with the mdadm.conf file - either not being wroitten, or not updated correctly.

    Re: MDADM Chaos!

Alright, I just gave up and tried to install FreeNAS, but that isn't working either, i'm getting a big hardware error or something. This is a total pain in the ass.

So then tried to re-install debian and set up the software raid when I'm installing it. When I go into the configure software RAID section, after creating a new partition table and physical for RAID partition on each of the drives, each of the drives is marked with a K instead of an F, and it wont allow me to remove the existing MD which it thinks is there called md0.

    Double frustrating!

Your best bet is to ask for assistance on debian irc channel or mailing list. Alternatively, you can try ubuntu, just like debian but "better" version perhaps.

have you tried creating a lvm partition on the disk rather than ext3?
