Vista 64bit seems a waste of time.

Ok so with my new pc i decided to get 64bit vista with having 4gb of ram...however nothing i used to work will work cuz of this signed driver thing or something else...

Ive tried multiple fan speed controllers, they wont work.
The software for my p5q-e mobo wont even work.
    Peer guardian wont work.
Even antivir doesnt seem to work right

    To name but a few...

Also ive been reading some disturbing things about how intrusive it is into your pc and personal info.

So my question is should i try 64bit xp go back to normal xp? try normal vista and sacrifice ram?

I dont like the orwellian nature that vista seems to have....

I can't comment on other fan speed controllers, but Speedfan works fine for me under Vista x64 under numerous hardware configurations.

Which software from your P5Q-E doesn't work? To be honest I've never rated the apps that Asus bundle with their boards anyways, but post the stuff you're having problems with and the details and we'll try to help you out.
PeerGuardian I haven't used in... donkey's years so I couldn't comment on that

    As for Antivir...

If an application is claiming to be compatible and isn't in your experience you need to raise it with the vendor really.

I have Vista 64, no problems with it so far... only issue I've encountered is I can't get my handsfree bluetooth headset to work on it Anyone have an idea on what to do?

Prolly best to start a new thread with as much info as you can about it (ie what bluetooth adapter you're using etc)

Speedfan is fine, as is Rivatuner
Motherboard software should be downloaded from the manufacturer website.
Peer Guardian does work. Mine is running as i type this.
AV can be dodgy with it......but i havent personally come across one that hasnt worked with Vista 64Bit yet.

Please don't take offence at this, but many of the problems faced by people using Vista 64Bit are self inflicted rather than OS inflicted.

AKA the problem oft lies twixt chair and keyboard. Not to say there aren't issues, but most stuff works fine, and for most of the rest there are alternatives.

Re: Vista 64bit seems a waste of time.

My old man has had no issues with 64bit so far, on an Asus P5Q-L mobo, not reorted any driver issues.

I even managed to install Office 97 on it and it works no problem! mind you its looks a bit strange having the ugly Office 97 Taskbar on the side of the screen running Vista.

Photoshop 4.0 installed fine and so did his McAfee & AOL. I thought the fan controllers would be just PnP?

I you have the time maybe you should try a re-install, check you have the 64bit Mobo drivers too.

Re: Vista 64bit seems a waste of time.

ok take peer guardian as an example remember this is 64bit NOT 32bit things work in 32bit..

    I get the error:

PG is unable to load packet filtering device.
    some junk..
Cannot verify digital signature for this device,

So its these digital signatures that seem to be doing it

For speed fan it installs and runs however , i cant control my fans, the rpm doesnt change i can only see the current rpm unless im doing something wrong?

    System is a pg5-e e8400 4 gig gtx 260mc

As for antivir i dont have my normal little umbrella in the bottom corner so i know its doing its job, so im not 100% sure its working all the time and it doesnt appear in task manager..

Re: Vista 64bit seems a waste of time.

Well, I've recently just built the rig I am using - which has the same mobo as you - and am using Vista64 too... I didnt have any trouble with the asus drivers, although I might not have tested all the software. Which software in particular are you having trouble with. In all honesty, I havent had any trouble with software at the moment, but I have been focused initially on games and overclocking...

In regards to the driver signing, I think that you can disable this by pressing F8 at boot time and there is an option there. Not sure if this is per boot, or permanantly, but in all honesty, its been running fine, just as good as Vista 32 used to, though not as fast games wise as XPSP2

Give some more feedback and we can try to help.

Re: Vista 64bit seems a waste of time.

I am another of those Vista64 users that has encountered no real problems what so ever. I had far more trouble over the years with XP.

I found a few small things ( software ) that would not load or be compatible but in the end it worked out for me and i was better of without them. They were replaced in time by better options and 64bit compatible ones.

What was fine for XP might not be fine for Vista64. Its evolving the software too not just hardware and OS.

You will find alternative's to your problems , if not better options if you really want Vista64 to work. It really is the best OS to date.

    JMHO.

Re: Vista 64bit seems a waste of time.

I used Vista 64 for around 8 months but with it not supporting older games with 16 Bit installers it just got to me so downgraded to 32 Bit and loving it.

64 Bit is definately no good with older apps also. If you want compatability then go for 32 Bit.

I just recently started using Vista 64bit and so far so good, even the Audigy 2 sound card is ok so far.
I have only installed a few apps, battlefield 2142 and have also just installed steam to check out the left for dead demo.

I still have my XP partition for backup just in case.

Ok...after much tinkering....i have (been using the f8 option for disabling signing etc)

Anti vir working all the time which is good.

Still cant find a good fan controller, can some1 please point in the direction of a really good fan controller that they KNOW works in 64

Peerguardian works only when in f8 mode which is ok for now..
