    Lenovo Ideapad S12

    Lenovo Ideapad S12 - Atom N270, 1.6GHz, 1GB, 160GB, 12 Inch 1280x800 WXGA LED, Windows XP Home (Black) approx £320 new

Any good? Looking for a 12" netbook / laptop and seen this. Nice price but need guidance as to wether it is any good. I am also looking at this one too:

HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz ION 11.6" Netbook - XP Home Approx £320 new too.

Should i hold out for the Compaq? Would that be a better one to go for? The difference in screen size doesn't look to be that much, or is it?

    Re: Lenovo Ideapad S12

The S12 is basically a netbook with a bigger, higher res screen. Okay for desktop stuff, but not much else.

I bought a HP 2510p second hand a few weeks ago from heuxs forums, check it out:

    Core2duo @ 1.2Ghz
    12.1" 1280x800 screen
    2Gb RAM
DVD Drive (a luxury on 12" laptops)
6 Cell battery lasts 5-6 hours
80Gb 1.8" PATA hard drive <--- weak point I think, but good enough for me.

Alternatively check out the Dell Latitude D420, plenty second hand on Ebay:

Note these are older "high end business ultra portables"

Edit: This looks a good deal and good seller:

I would check out the Acer Ferrari One:

Not bad for £400 and it comes with a dual core CPU,780G integrated graphics and Windows 7. It even has an XGP port!!

    Re: Lenovo Ideapad S12

The two you have listed are basic netbook spec.

The S12 is virtually the same as any other netbook (8/9/10" machines - like MSI Wind / Acer Aspire One / Asus EEE PC ranges).

The HP Compaq is the same, but with better intergrated graphics (Geforce 9400M), still not mind blowing, but would play limited 3D games, and should give you HD playback ability if you're wanting to hook it up to a Full HD TV (assuming you use appropriate software and video format that can make sure the 9400M can offload the burden from the CPU).

The Atom CPU is very weak in both of these, and is sinlge core. Cat and myself are trying to give you examples of what you can get that is a better spec for your money.

    Re: Lenovo Ideapad S12

Shame as if you can pick it up for £400 as suggested the speci is pretty sweet for a modern netbook / notebook hybrid.

The HD3200 graphics isn't half bad, giving about 80% the performance of the 9400M. But the processor is much better, being dual core.
