Very nice. What are you upgrading from? hopefully not a core 2 based system...

Why not go for 4gb? and seeing that ddr3 has much higher latencies than ddr2 i shouldnt expect games to run that intensively on it.

because of triple channel RAM, 3/6GB is the new 2/4GB as they say

    Crysis?

It didn't allow me to have my programs open while playing it (smoothly) on 3.25GB

Re: How will this i7 system fare?

i might go for 6gb, mainly for photoshop, illustrator, maya and 3ds. Photoshop is getting a bit slow when working with 500mb+ files

im going to try and get that coolermaster 840 case. i love it and it has everything i could of wished for a case!

i will build this pc in january so im hoping its doable for £1100

yes i plan to game alot on this and only use my ps3 for footy games. i will also do a bit of everything else ie photoshoping, programming and video editing.

i want this build to last me 3-4 years with just changing the GPU once in a while to play the latest and greatest games

I'd watch out... that kind of upgrade can lead to cranial explosion.

I would say just a 450W will suffice

Installed a HD4870 today and the power usage is still quite low.
I'm quite tempted to get an i7 system but I think the memory price is just too high.

Just bought 2x2G of DDR2-800 from the states for 20 bucks + shipping, couldn't really justify spending THAT much money on ram.

Interesting article but i wont be getting a 4870x2(1680x res overkill), a blu ray drive(i have a ps3) a solid state hdd(sata is fine for my needs) or infact a 1000w psu(someone said the corsair 520 is enough). Half of those components are over kill plus i will get 3gb not 6gb so i can save almost half of that £1,994.99 (inc. VAT).

makes it more doable that a i7 system along with the top of the range case can be purchased for just over £1000.

i was afraid that i may have to spend over 1100 if i wanted that coolermaster 840 case. is the ATI 4850 the best gpu for my res or would a 4870/260gtx gain more improvements at my res?

i was afraid that i may have to spend over 1100 if i wanted that coolermaster 840 case. is the ATI 4850 the best gpu for my res or would a 4870/260gtx gain more improvements at my res?
At your res I don't think you would get many noticeable improvements by going that step further. Over time the differences might become more apparent and if you are not willing to upgrade in that 3-4 years then perhaps it would be worth going for the slightly more expensive cards.

Since you are getting an X-58 though, be aware that the HD48*0's seems to scale fantastically well in crossfire so that is always an option especially if you go with one of the cheaper HD4850 or even HD4830's to begin with

Re: How will this i7 system fare?

Aye. That's why I'll eventually get another 4850 to stick in XF .
