PSU Questions

Hi am building a pc and have just a couple quick shots..

What is the difference between a modular psu and one that isn't and how do they affect your set up and advantages/disadvantages.

Also can't decide between the corsair HX520, the vx550 and the tx650.. I have a coolermaster cm690 case, will pick up a ep45-ds45 mobo and a ATI 4870 graphics card and 2x1T Hardrives and 1X500G harddrive for my operating system.. I did a questionare thingy an typed in my system and it says either a hx520, vx550 or a tx650 all should be fine.. but which one?..

Any help appreciated.. fanx

Modular has the cables seperate so you only have to use the cables you require. Most people go for this option now as not only is it tidier within the case, but the airflow improves giving better in case cooling.

As for the choices you have made, the HX520 is the better unit of the 3.

If i can ask though, why the Corsair unit?
Take a look at the Enermax MODU+82 units. They are better quality, more efficient and also extremely quiet. In fact, i can honestly say, owning both the Corsair and the Enermax, that the Enermax is the quieter of the two.

Its only £2 more than the Corsair aswell........if it was £20 more it would still be the better buy.

I feel I may have recommended the corsair a few too many times.. these new prices are a joke.. sorry if this is my doing lol I got mine for £60 :(

Tbh at that price difference everything Blitzen is saying holds. If SPCR say it\'s quieter.. it\'s quieter so thats a given. It\'s a couple of percent more efficent across the board afaik and i\'ll just take Mr Blitzens word on quality as I only have the corsair. That\'s not to say the Corsair isn\'t high quality though as I believe it is, even the flat cables which few people seem to like.

I wouldn\'t get the 550W VX since it isn\'t a seasonic PSU as the 520W HX and 650W TX are.

So you can\'t go wrong with either the enermax or corsair. One thing to note since enermax have just closed shop on the UK centre, BUY FROM SCAN! You get a warranty straight to them for the 3 - 5 years whatever it is from both enermax ann corsair.

I have the Corsair and while it is quiet the cables aren\'t of the quality I\'d expect from such a unit.

If I was buying again I\'d go for the Enermax Moud82+

I went for the Corsair as at the time the price differential was much larger

Yep.....
When the HX520 was priced to compete with the Enemrax Liberty, it was a good buy (as was the Liberty). There was little in the price and little difference in quality. There were 'fors and againsts' for both so it was good to have the choice.

Now the HX520 is priced to rival the MODU82, there is no value in the Corsair at all as the MODU82 is so much better and the fors are massively outweighing the against in favour of the Enermax.

Although know problems with PSU's

We offer a 5 year RTB warranty on Corsair and they are quality Units

In your case I suggest the 520w HX

Anyway, you also have a similar arrangement with Enermax now dont you (thats the way it reads).
The Corsair, although a decent unit, just doenst compete in price now as well as quality and thats a shame.
I am positive you will see the light and be converted :)

I have to agree with Blitzen here and for one good reason the Seasonic M12 500w
For thoes of you who have forgotten the hx520w is an M12 500w rebranded with a new paint job and flat cables (must say I do love thoes flat cables)
Now the thing is that when the HX520w came out it was a good £20 cheaper than the M12 500w, now however the m12 is a few quid cheaper which makes it a better buy. (also has 5 year warranty)

I'd also like to put forward the Tagan TG500-BZ for consdieration, I'm not 100% sure what it's like (cannot find any reviews :( ) but it has thoes nice modular connectors that I seem to remember Blitzen likes . . . :tomato:

Those connectors are great (similar to the Hiper ones).
If the Enermax/Corsair/Seasonics of this world would only follow suit and make a PSU with these connectors then we really would have a brilliant unit.
