difference between DVI and VGA
Ok so i have had a 24" monitor for a while and i am using it from an onboard graphics card. obviously DVI is better, but i wanted to know if there is a big enough difference to make me change? i have on eplugged to DVI downstairs but my antec P180 case is too big to fit under my desk, so i have a dell optilex 620 SFF in my room.
i am very limited to GFX cards as the PSU is very low watts i think. and at what rate would my monitor deteriorate in terms of brightness/quality etc?
Re: difference between DVI and VGA
for me it has always been down to the monitor's ability, not the graphics card.
Can you see the difference? If not, dont fret! Most modern monitors Auto Adjust screen size and position when a VGA is plugged in anyway.
Having said that, TiG's 24"Dell looked better on DVI the other day when we swapped it frm VGA.
Re: difference between DVI and VGA
i dont neccesarily think dvi is better than vga

Of course it is. The interface isn't the problem, it's how monitors render the bitstream it recieves.
Re: difference between DVI and VGA
When I had my Dell 24" hooked to my laptop via VGA I often got visual interference on the screen. It also always looked a little soft too.
Now I have the same screen hooked to my new system with a Quadro graphics card the picture is stunning. very sharp and not a single bit of interference (obviously). I just need to get it calibrated properly for photos now.
Re: difference between DVI and VGA
The difference between VGA and DVI become more apparent with larger displays.
DVI delivers an image that's perfect down to every pixel from the PC to the monitor, analogue signals over VGA have to be reconverted to a digital signal by the monitor and this is where quality can vary between monitors. The graphics card also has to convert a digital signal to analogue when using VGA, while this signal is sent to the monitor it's also affected by interference in a way digital (DVI) signals aren't.

obviously... but to what degree? is it like watching a normal tv then switching to HD or like normal tv to say a plasma. i am talking about the wow factor here.:angst:
Re: difference between DVI and VGA
It purely depends on the monitor.
On a 15" TFT, You'd be hard pressed to notice it.
On my 24" Dell TFT, D-sub looks horrid - really bad ghosting, even on static images.

Force of habit :D
In my mind, VGA = 640×480 and not the connector for some reason. Never got used to it being called anything else.
I'm getting old...
Re: difference between DVI and VGA
The change is not really noticeable untill you go over 1600x120 or 1680x1050 (22")
Although it can vary between monitors and cable quality.

XFX NVidia 8400gs Low Profile pci-e graphics cards
ok so i am about to buy the above card. i have a Dell Optiplex 620 not the biggest one, but the one just below it. it has a small PSU.
i wanted to know if the card will actually run on my computer? and will i see much improvement? i mainly watch movies and some photoshop (nothing extreme)
thank!
Re: difference between DVI and VGA
How about DVI vs HDMI? Does HDMI have and edge over DVI in regards to HD content?
