My new rig, what do you think?

Hello all,

I am new to this forums and I would like to introduce myself and my newly bought rig.

Please be kind in your critique as I have ordered the stuff and I can't bear to think that I have done any big mistakes!!! Mind you, I have studied and asked around thoroughly before ordering so the following setup should be good.

case: Antec 1200
mobo: DFI DK 790GX
cpu: 7750 Black edition
ram: 4gb (2x2) corsair twinX 8500
gpu: Asus 4850 512mb
Cooler: Arctic Cooler Freezer 64 Pro
PSU: 850w Coolermaster modular
hd: 1tb F1 spinpoint samsung
monitor: dell 2709w
bunch of fans and keyboard/mouse cordless combo.
I have a lightscribe dvdrw double layer (can't remember brand) new as a gift for Xmas

So what do you think?

My thought was to get a cheap/ok-ish cpu for the moment and upgrade to Deneb around March when prices will have stabilised. I was looking for a cheap upgrade path and I decided AMD was the most competitive option considering I am not on the lookout for the bleeding edge and I have no need for extremely expensive cpu's/setups or extreme overclocking.

I believe that the mobo I got will be ok for Deneb (as it seems, it has a 750southbridge and the 790gx chipset which is new and has been proven on existing benches and reviews of deneb to hold quite well with a bios update).

I thought of buying a strong psu, case, monitor as I intend to keep them for many years. The gpu is a middle class one as I don't game too much and I intend to change it around Autumn 09 with the new gen of gpu's. The mobo/cpu are headed for Deneb replacement and I will be adding for hd's in the near future.

So, what do you think?

First of all, Welcome to Hexus, hope you enjoy here Kosgi
The system seems good with what your thoughts are, cheap CPU, its a good one, not bleeding edge, fine, average performance, sounds fine. Why the DFI board? I think MSI has an excellent 790 board, Ive heard good things about it, you should consider it, since you plan to keep the board. The rest seems fine, you said you dont game much, I think the 4850 is quite a good card, it should be fine even if you do want to game, you really don't need to change it so soon IMO. The rest seems fine to me. Good luck with everything!

PS: I forgot to add, since the black edition comes with an unlocked multiplier, overclock it to get the max out of it?

Looks like a very nice build. There are things I would change, the PSU being the main one but there's nothing too bad about it. You might find the freezer makes a bit more noise than you would like.. but it might not

I like the idea that you have built it with a mind to upgrade as AMD seem to be on their way back up into the mid range at the very least, I have just built an AMD system as well.

Looks fine, I think the PSU and case are rather overkill for the rest of it.
If you hadn't already ordered them I would of looked at a good 450-500w psu and the antec 900 or even antec 300 as the case.
Your bits are going to look a little lost in that cavernous 1200

Thank you all for the very constructive and kind feedback!! I feel rather relieved for the choices I have made.

I acknowledge that the PSU is indeed an overkill but I thought to buy something strong and not have to deal with a PSU upgrade for the next few years. Especially since I plan on getting a Deneb and a few more hard disks within 2009 as well as a next gen GPU by the end of 2009. There might have been better choices of a PSU at the same watts but nothing better (or rather more silent) was available from the retailer I bought the stuff (I wanted to buy everything from one source to avoid double-charging on shipping and having to do only with one supplier).

The mobo may not be the best, I believe you when you suggest an MSI one, but again I had the same problem, a couple better boards that I knew of were out of stock and I just had to have the system set up tomorrow!! (It's my personal present for 2008 and it just had to be ready by the end of the year!)

As for overclocking, I most certainly plan to overclock the bits out of the processor but just not yet. I am completely new to the whole realm of overclocking so it will probably take me a few months to figure out all the ins and outs of the system at stock speeds before I feel confident on overclocking. But I will do eventually and I will be posting at the forum with my findings every now and then!

I've always been an AMD fan and this time I was going to go with Intel. Now this thread has made me think twice.

what is the best chipset for the AMD cpu's now ? Please don't say Nvidia - I'm never buying another one of their products after the Nforce3.

I stick with ATi. I bought a 780V which is a slightly cut down (onboard graphics mainly, still more than blu ray capable) 780G. The 790GX boards are very nice but since a lot of the nice AMD chips (right now) are black editions, overclocking motherboards are not that necessary but obviously may become so for later chips.

My Asus 780V and Phenom 9950 run sweetly together though, paried with PC6400 cas4 it's a lovely system and without the embelishments I made to mine it would have been superbly cheap. I wanted silence and superior quality as it's not strictly for me and I don't want to fix it

Oh and I'd take DFI over MSI any day!

It is really not that hard, you dont need months, When i came to Hexus, I didnt know squat, and then I was overclocking my e6300 to a 100% with in..what? 2 days? lol, really, Hexus is a great place, look around, read around and you will be overclocking like a pro in days! See you around

Best current AMD chipset is the 790GX or the 790FX both with the 750 SouthBridge (that is important as it boosts the overclocking of the boards significantly! All GX boards have this the newer FX boards do).

I would go for the DFI boards if overclocking is a likely outcome for you lots of settings to tweak to get the best from your CPU
