hi guys, im looking to get a new proccessor at christmas this year. im not sure what i should get, however im on a £200, maybe a bit over, and im looking for a proccessor fit for gaming. im currently running on 3gb DDR2, Nvidea Geforce 9800gt 512mb, AMD Athlon 64 3500+, with an ASRock motherboard (google 'AM2NF6G-VSTA' for details). My OS is XP but im going for vista at christmas to get DX10. Any ideas on what i should get?

    Re: Help

Well if you want to stick with AMD then get something like a brisbane core x2. 5000+ or higher would be nice ~£50 or so.

    You could switch to Intel with an E5200 (£60) and suitable motherboard (abit IP-35 dark raider/ biostar P4 .. £65 - £75).

    Re: Help

As StaffsMike said, if going to Vista you could prehaps put some of that money towards a 4GB RAM set, with 2 of your 3GB (presuming it is 2*1GB and 1*512MB) giving you 6GB RAM

and yeh, i forgot to mention, the £200 budget is because theres 80 pound on top of that going on 2X 2GB memory, combining it with 2 of my 1gb pieces to fill in the 4 slots

    Gr8 minds think alike
but £80...! thats a lot for 4GB kit, go for something like this...cmon scan...http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-(...d-CAS-5-5-5-18, its what I have, and will clock a C2Q6600 to 3.6 without being OCKED itself.

As for CPUs something like an E5200 will have a vast improvement as it is duel core, and your one is single core, and it clocks well. (though I cant find it on scan atm), and for the mobo to go with, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150283, or http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...-SATA-RAID-ATX.

cool, most places ive found a 4gb set at 80 pound, anyhow i now get it cheaper, thanks . as for my proccesor i was always under the impression it was dual core, i never did much research into it when i got it, but im sure the guy in the shop said it was. but think it will show improvement i may have to look into getting that

    Re: Help

Your 3500+ is single core. Dual will be a whole new world lol

I'd stick with the AMD tbh, for gaming you won't notice a difference as long as it's 2.4-2.6GHz or more.

Try to get tight latency ram for AMD though, core 2's don't mind so much

    Re: Help

O.o nice keyboard, makes me jealous...I take it your getting it from scan for a tad under £30. As for Vista, I presume your going 4 64-bit OEM, which costs a lot less than retail, just remember that if you buy a new mobo you will not be able to move it accross, tho it costs less than 1/2 the price.

Finally dont forget to check today only to save a bit more cash (tho there is nothing from your shopping list on today, may be tomorrow)

yeh, im gonna work out where is cheapest and take a list down to a local shop, i get all my stuff from there so ill ask them to order the stuff in and fit it all up for me, since i go there for most my stuff they do repairs for free, perhaps they may even install vista free of charge too, hopefully
