Help! Need to find a properly encrypted pen drive for the wife!
As title. Anyone use a decent encrypted pen drive?
Is hardware encryption better or is software just as good?
Any help welcome. You may even get thanked! ;)

All the Standard Corsair drives also come with software encryption.

google 'truecrypt', pretty good free software encryption

+1 for that.

some of those "encrypted" usb drives are nothing more than an autorun program that doesn't let you access the drive without a password.. easily bypassed by turning off autorun.
if you want real encryption, use truecrypt as suggested
Re: Help! Need to find a properly encrypted pen drive for the wife!
Thanks all. I will get her one of the truecrypt corsair ones.
Re: Help! Need to find a properly encrypted pen drive for the wife!
Treucrypt - freeware software encrypter
Corsair pendrive - does not come with truecrypt, but it's own software
Just so we're clear :)
If she's going to want to access the pendrive on various machines, as I understand it, every machine will need to have truecrypt installed so the PC can 'decode' the encrypted pendrive and make it usable.

Hmm, she really needs one she can just plug in and go, no need for software installation. Perhaps the one Paul suggested would be best.
On the corsair sticks it does seem to indicate that you get the Truecrypt software with them.

Re: Help! Need to find a properly encrypted pen drive for the wife!
Clearly, to be used antwhere it needs to be clientless, and to be secure it needs to be proper encryption.
I can recommend StegoStick - very secure, Kingston DataTraveller Privacy Edition also very secure and more intuative to used than StegoStick, or if you want mega strong security there is SafeBoot for USB Phantom - this is not a cheap solution normally (but it could be - I have 2 brand new unused..... a gift from the company - PM me if interested).

Thanks. I will not be indulging in out of classified forum bargaining though! ;)
Re: Help! Need to find a properly encrypted pen drive for the wife!
truecrypt is basically copied/installed to the flash drive and when you plug in the drive you run it and mount your encrypted disk, there are versions for:
Windows 2000/XP/Vista
Mac OS X
Linux
download page here http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php
it is not necessarily true that the drive needs to be clientless, how else will you decrypt the drive?
i'd say that most if not all the drives will a least run a program that works with windows which will ask for the password to decrypt the contents
here's the big question, would you rather put your trust in a hardware manufacturer who won't tell you how the thing is encrypted OR truecrypt which has been tried and tested to be secure and the encryption methods are well documented on their website?
Re: Help! Need to find a properly encrypted pen drive for the wife!
I will d/l truecrypt tonight and stick it on a spare stick and have a play. I would rather be playing Warhammer online though. You should all be aware of that! ;)

Opps Sorry - did not mean to be breaking any rules - not activly trying to sell stuff - just I have it and don't use or want it. Pay the postage and I will send it to you for free to demonstrate my sorrow for any unintended wrong-doing to the moderators. And it did cost serious money - but provides serious security.

By clientless I mean that it is completly self contained - the PC you plug the USB device into does not need a client or application installed that you have to run inorder to access the data on the encrypted device.
