Computer dead?

Well i was just reseating the heatsink on my cpu and after trying to boot, i get nothing apart from the gpu fan going 100% then to 35%(guess its posting?) no display on screen. I thought it could be the cpu so i got a pentium d but it still doesnt work. Ive checked the cabling etc, nothing seems wrong but i did notice a faint noise when it was on, a computer noise? If that makes sense .

Any ideas on what it could be? Help is appreciated.

You could try resetting the BIOS?

i cant believe i missed that, i tried resetting the bios(jumper, switch) but forgot to take battery out. It now loads to post but i get the message " CMOS checksum error-loading defaults" But i cant continue or go into the bios, f1 and del dont work lol. ANy more ideas?

It must be posting then. Have you tried pushing in the GPU, and what noise is this faint noise? The GPU usually squeals if it hasn't got all it's power cables in.

it is an electrical noise i think but now its posting i just need tofind a way to load .

Sounds like a dead GFX card. My third PC's 6800GT just died and although it booted up on that PC, before descending into graphical carpets, when I tried it in mine it was exactly as you described. Luckily with my mobo I could see that the boot was happening thanks to the LED code.

luckily it isnt (i think) since its booting into windows now, been good for a good while so think its alright. Thanks for the help guys.
