Is this possible?
New, or second hand?
New without need for case or hard drive.
Probably need to upgrade it within a few days if you want to play any new games :P .
Without a need for a hard drive and case its.... not really possible
Motherboard: No idea, something ~ £50
CPU: e5200- ~£60
RAM: pc6400 2gb ~ £20
PSU: 500w BFG ~ £50
GPU: ati 4830 ~£90 or an nvidia 9800GT~£90
Total: £270
Could try 9600GT for ~£70, cheaper motherboard of like £30 but then you still talking £230 so i guess you should save a bit more :P.
i still think you should try second hand?:undecided
Otherwise your best to save up a bit.
how about dont waste money on a cheap thing and just save up
Well I would have to agree with everyone and say save up a bit longer and wait. But for about £200 this is qhat I managed:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150596 - 460W PSU
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148715 - E5200 2.5Ghz dual core CPU
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119279 - 2GB DDR800 Crucial Ballistix RAM
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148094 - Asus G31 mobo (should overclock reasonably well)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150349 - ATI 4670 (decent mid range graphics card)
Total: £213.80 inc VAT
That would still be a decent enough rig, but a bit more money will help no end.
Hawker
assuming you have an os an amd route that could double as a HTPC after
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/350W-...ATA-80plus-Eff - 350 PSU £27.49 ( not checked if this would be ok )
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/512MB...-DL-DVI-I-HDMI ASUS ATI 4670 £62.45
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-(...d-CAS-5-5-5-15 2GB CVS memory £21.31
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...-RAID-HDMI-ATX ASUS 780g Mobo £47.83
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-A...ergy-Eff-S-AM2 AMD x2 5000+ £45.97
£205.05 Inc VAT + Delivery
Personaly I would wait
bit-tech do a good technology round up each month (maybe hexus could do their own and get some competition going ;)) but I'm in two minds about your predicament. Most people spend lots of money on PCs and so expect other people to spend a lot of money too, but as long as you get cheap CPU and motherboard you could get a *reasonable* system that would play games. Don't expect it to be a monster PC and others are right in recommending if you want to get the best value for money you spend more you get more. I think it would be interesting actually to do a chart of bang for buck vs total expenditure, I expect it would be a curve whereby when you spend very little you have poor bang for buck and when you spend a lot you will also have poor bang for buck, its about hitting the sweet spot.
£300 would get you a decent enough machine, though.

The above £200 machines will do the job but if you could get to £300 (as Dreaming says) you will get all the performance you need for current gaming.
