    Mobo - no Asus, so...?

Got the go-ahead to build a new box for a mate.
I like Asus boards and also the AMD chipset (690, 740), but Scan doesn't have any Asus boards in the range that I'm looking at (no o/c or gaming so don't need a lot).

Need to drive a 22" monitor, which the AMD chip will do. I have no experience of chipsets from nVidia or Via so would like to stick with ATI.

Looking at Gigabyte or Foxconn - any opinions as to which is better, please?

I'm about the get one of these (they have them on scan too)
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150281

It was £47 last night (DOH!) but it's still awesome for the money. DVI, HDMI and display port. the normal 780G blu ray capable graphics. Supports all the AMD chips including 140W monsters.

Great board all in all I think (hope).

If it were for me I'd be tempted, but he's on a limited budget and also doesn't need anywhere near this level of performance.
I've been looking at ebuyer a bit as Scan's stock is in its usual shambles.

I dunno though, ebuyer are far less honest in what they actually have in stock. They don't keep their stuff in-house, so there's no guarantee you'll get it as fast. Scan always really do have stuff they say they do.

That'd be nice! Last year I had the wrong mobo deliverd - correct label on the box though.

There are plenty of posts about items in stock when orderd and then not there.

Well you can tell if they have it in stock or not. It depends on which warehouse the items come from. If you're going to be ordering PC bits they'll most likely actually have that in stock. It's the other things you don't buy for a PC build that they cross ship.

What is better is they show actual numbers of stock. So you know when it really is going to run out.

If you've used Scan quite a bit you'd know by now even if it's showing in stock doesn't really mean it's there I'm guessing they have lower stock numbers so therefore don't want to show how many, just whether it is or isn't (in stock), and it's probably why things go out of stock so often. Rarely you get that problem on eBuyer.

I'd say it was the opposite. If EBuyer site says it's in stock I've always got it when they said, which isn't always the case with Scan. I don't know what after sales is like because I've never had to return anything, but as far as sales is concerned they've been exemplary.

Re: Mobo - no Asus, so...?

I was told yesterday that there's a general shortage of Asus boards because they're shipped from the USA and, due to the weak pound, no one wants to have a lot of stock. If the pound strengthens against the dollar, those with low stocks can lower the price so those with large stocks will lose money.

I've been looking at Misco as, for smaller items (not case and monitor) it's only a 40-mile round trip on me bike so I could save the carriage and have a ride :-)

Not really, we're just backing up eBuyer because they're still good, and part of what you said isn't true. I'm guessing you haven't seen their warehouse? (Awesome and Massive BTW)

Just making sure the OP gets the right information, and should anyone lie about Scan you'd see others come to defend them too

Re: Mobo - no Asus, so...?

If ebuyer's stock levels are live and correct, then Scan could learn from that.

ebuyer does at least say 'in stock' or 'at suppliers'. I wonder if ebuyer allows suppliers to put items on to the stock as Scan does - always seemed like a way to lose control.

Well they are live (as in change as you order) I can say as I've always checked the numbers on a few items when I order and yes they decrease by 1 or more so it seems to be live which is what every retailer should do.

That was me being grumpy about being let down once a while ago... In future I'll really allow for at least one minor mistake
