    Smile Do your stuff peeps!

Dad wants a new system for me step mother.

Not a gaming machine, but want as much bang for buck as possible! Got 400 to spend (might be able to go 450) in good old English pound coins!

Starting from scratch on this one, so need monitor, keyboard and mouse, maybe speakers (I have some spares though!).

To be used for word processing and learning 'stuff'. Not hardcore gaming 'stuff' though!

    What can you find me?

If it's not gonna be used for games at all would she be able to live with onboard GFX?

Maybe, but I might be inclined not to, because it may require upgrading in the future. I want to make it fairly future proof for her.

The cheapest Shuttle XPC (both Intel and AMD) is around £200-250. Since XPCs have built in graphics and sound, you don't need to worry about the expansion cards for those functions. If you spend £80 on a CPU, it should be plenty good enough. A 30GB HDD is around £45; A DVD drive is around £30. Mouse and keyboard will be anywhere between £15-£50 depending on quality.

So far, you've probably blown £370-450 depending on which model you choice of things and what quality. That leaves you with around £80 for the monitor... Time for a bit of eBay action!

nForce2 mobo with it all built in.....XP1800 chip....2x256 of PC333....17" Hansol monitor or similar.......should be a doddle Dont go flat screen for oldies mate..they will NEVER appriciate it, and you'll be wastng your dough

and it'll be upgradeable to anything XP up to and beyond 3000+ AND it'll have AGP slot spare AND it'll have kicking sound....and loads of upgrade potential.

I think most people like the Abit one. A CD RW is only about £30 for a beast 52x32x52 so they wont need a monster HDD....30 gig should do most parents

Abit NF7-M mainboard for Socket A, LAN £89,60
AMD Athlon XP1800+ 1.53 GHz 266 MHz bus OEM £39,56
    TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 256MB * 2 £74,76
    Suntek Miditower TH-655 Blue + PSU £58,84
    ADi 17" CRT MicroScan V77 TCO-99 £86,32
    Maxtor IDE ATA-133 80GB 7200RPM £60,69
Asus CD recorder IDE 52x/24x/52x £35,84

Hope that helps, its pretty good spec stuff, don't agree with the 30gb hard disk, when they are £41 quid and you get can get 80GB for £60.69

Sure its top end of specified range £445 and it uses integrated graphics/sound/network card etc.

But it is future proof if the graphics ever becomes a problem just stick something in the AGP slot

Plus the above spec allows for dropping some money on one item to replace it on another. I'd suggest the people who think a shuttle and lcd come within £450 need to actually do the MATHS!.

I still reckon a 30gig is better.......give an old dear 80 gig and they'll never see the bottom of it...PLUS it;ll take 4 million years to defrag.

£41 for a 30 gig is good as gold.....and that burner is too much dough. Liteon are good buys.

Now you need a heatsink for a tenner....and a couple of case fans for £3 total.

Other than those small items..TiG is right

Komplett is where its from (yes including vat), Komplett don't do liteon drives as far as i could see, plus a 80gb drive is less likely to require defragging than a 30gb drive is.

OK i missed the fans etc, but i did say he could mess about with the config

    Shuttle With TFT:

    Shuttle sn41g2 - £190 - dabs
    XP1700 cpu - £36 - ebuyer
    2*256mb 2700 - £61 - ebuyer
    60 gig 180GXP - £44 - ebuyer
    Sony 52x cdrw - £30 - ebuyer
    Memorex kbd - £6 - ebuyer
    optical mouse - £5 - ebuyer
    15" TFT - £175 - ebuyer

    Total = £547 inc vat

I'm sure if you hunt around you can knock it a bit lower, but you'll have a hell of a job getting the tft in there too for £450..

Edit: Found a philips tft on ebuyer with a damaged box for only £130, bringing it down to £502, but I guess that's cheating

Nice try stoo, amazed how much sn41g2's have dropped in recent weeks. They held value well and i've not seen one down at £190.

    Good find..

Yeah, I was somewhat amazed to find only a £5 difference between the 41g2 and the 45g, looks like I might get a shuttle before too much longer after all
