    Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Has anyone else's NC10 got these two marks / blotches on the screen (click thumbnail for full image):

I've so far only found three or four other people with the problem but it seems to be a manufacturing fault. It took me a very long time (on the phone to both Samsung and Play.com) to get a replacement set up so I'm starting this thread in the hopes of raising awareness.

The marks are pretty easy to miss and only really show up on a white background.

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Good eyes Mike, it's very hard to get a good photograph but the second (negative) image shows it much more clearly. The only thread I can find with people experiencing the same marks is on OCUK:

The above user managed to get a replacement (from OCUK), one user has just had his unit picked up by Samsung for 'testing' and another two or three are still debating what to do.

Look closely people, I find the marks become more visible with the brightness turned down.

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Pressure marks, normally caused by pressure from behind the panel

Older laptops would often have a reinforcement frame in the lid behind the screen, consisting of the square frame with 2 cross beams in the middle.
The down side is it would often cause pressure marks following the X shape of the frame across the screen.

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

If its within the 12 month warrenty it might be worth contacting Samsung directly.

I bought a 20" model off of them (name escapes me, has the 2 tone black/silver bar running along the bottom of the screen) and 2 months after i bought it i managed to flick super glue(!) onto the screen (dont ask, i was making a model for university). I contacted samsung and described the 2 ''mysterious'' marks on the screen and within a week, no question asked, they gave me a new screen and picked up the super glued model. Iv never seen customer service so helpfull!

Give them a call and see what they say!

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Looks like more people are starting to notice the problem:

    http://www.sammynetbook.com/plugins/...pic.php?5280.0

Just a quick update from my point of view, I got my NC10 picked up by Play.com (Parcel Force) on the 12th December for a replacement and according to the tracking-me-do it was signed for on the 15th. Unless I'm missing something there's no way to track a return with Play so it looks like I'm playing a festive waiting game...

EDIT: Samsung seem to have officially recognized the defect:

Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics. We appreciate your interest in our newly released line of Notebook PC's.

I apologize for the issue that you have experienced with the NC10. We have been made full aware of the issue and we have a resolution with the blotches on the screen. For any customer that has this issue they can have it repaired by Samsung at no cost. I'm not aware as to if the resolution will be implemented in future releases, but I would assume that it will be. It may already have been corrected and the next one you receive may not have this issue. If it does, I would recommend you contact us so that we may get it repaired for you. Thank you and have a nice day.

If you should have any other question or concerns you can either reply to this e-mail, or call us at 1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864).

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Has anyone reported having obtained a satisfactory fix for this? I've seen a few posts where machines have been returned to the seller or Samsung but no mention of the outcome.
... I use now a big vent for the whole machine now, but I cant use it forever, it is my grandma's ventilator...

    Hello..

Just received a couple here in the U.S. w/ the same smudges (same position on screen) :/ Can you tell me where you got that official response from Samsung? Another thread or was that their reply to you?

    Thanks & Happy Holidays

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Happy holidays matey, welcome to Hexus. Samsung's response was taken from one of the threads I was reading though but I'm afraid I can't find it again.

Last update: Rang Play.com on Saturday night to check the status of my exchange, oddly nothing had been put through but seeing that they'd received my faulty unit the girl scheduled a replacement to be sent out with next day delivery.

Got my brand new NC10 this afternoon and I'm happy to report the screen is perfect - Happy New Year!

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

That's excellent news. I sent both out units in to a Samsung service center here in the states. They say they will be repaired or replaced within 5 days and mailed back. Hopefully I'll have the same results. FWIW Samsung service has been more then helpful. Free shipping labels, followup emails, etc.

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Glad i found this thread cos i thought it was just my nc10. i think ive got a screen fault but its not blotches. 3 times now my screen has just completely blanked out. all programs still run with sound etc but i just cant see anything till i turn it on and off. dont know if its just to do with itunes cos it seems to have only happened when that is running so far and now the netbook insists on putting itunes into some kind of strange photo-negative. everything looks fine on my seperate monitor so i reckon its a hardware fault. any ideas?

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

Have you had a play with the power save options? The screen blanking out sounds like it's going into standby mode.

As for iTunes being in negative... that's just plain weird. Could you take a photograph?

    Re: Samsung NC10 screen fault...

ignore the itunes thing the screen reset to 16bit rather than 32bit. screen hasn't blanked for a while but its defo not a standby thing cos everything carries on playing as usual minus the fact that its impossible to see it. guess ill just see what happens and claim on the guarentee if worst comes to worst.
