    PSU + GTX280 problems

I've just got myself a BFG GTX 280 OC. After getting everything set up and all the drivers downloaded and installed i had a go at running a few of my games on the new card.

Firstly; UT3 - maxxed: ran fine, Fallout 3; maxed out, ran fin...

Then COD5, i got into the opening scene and the whole system cut out...
the same was true of bioshock (but only when the action kicked in), and Company of heroes...

The odd thing is I can still surf the web and play fallout 3 without a hitch (as far as i know, havent really had the chance to test)...

I've ordered a new 100W psu (OCZ ProXStream 1000W PSU) to replace my EZcool 700w psu, but wondered if I was making a mistake and this could be something completely different? Ordering the 1000W for future proofing compltetly overlooking the noise factor...

But im not sure what else could cause a system to cut out without warning.

Sorry for rambling but im gettting mega stressed out about it

EZCool are a pile of the proverbial.... so you need to change it anyway...

if i were you i would have ordered a 640w corsair HX or Enermax modu82+, both brilliant PSU's

it's not about the rated wattages, it's about what the PSU can actually do...

    Re: PSU + GTX280 problems

In fairness the OCZ is a good unit from what I hear but 1000W is way over the top.

As above or even the 520/525W versions of the same PSU will serve your purpose will tonnes to spare.

The more watts for future proofing has gone out of the window imo apart from over the top PC's. Companies are doing their best to use the least power possible and as such a decent 500/600W PSU should be enough for the life of any system and it's upgrades.

Obviously dual HD4870 X2's might require a bit more juice but then you shouldn't be running dual HD4870 X2's because that's pretty dumb really.

Oh and it absolutely is that EzCool POS's fault.. everything is EzCool's fault.

    Re: PSU + GTX280 problems

    lol.

    cheers for the input guys
The reason i went for the OCZ 1000w was because it was cheap, noise was the only con in its reviews (which i can live with) and i'm pretty sure i'll be getting another GTX280 in the near future and a load more kit but saying that i still havent really justified 1000w, lol, ah well, ebuyer were practically giving them away in christmas offeres neways. But I agree EZcool is %$£^...

I just hope I havent damaged my system with my persistence.

Well an OCZ one will be better than your EZCool and they are good PSU's.

    Re: PSU + GTX280 problems

1000W huh, Well if your not using all of the 1000W available then hopefully the PSU has SMART fan control ie. variable fan speed based on PSU load/temp.

Another trick, if your feeling brave and want to be a bit of a PSU modder, is to slap a zener diode in series with the voltage supply to the fan. If you can monitor temps of PSU then you can experiment with different zener diodes and voltage drops.

The drop in voltage will reduce the fan speed and noise generated but of course also reduce cooling to the PSU components, so caution needs to be taken.

Alternatively change the PSU Fan to one which is lower noise but is able to deliver and equialent cfm of air flow.

Any how 1000W is over kill, but!!! you know if your running in the mid point of a PSU like 1000W, your likely to be hitting the peak efficiency. Or you will at least if this is your particular OCZ PSU (80plus report)
