    Cpu/Mobo/Ram for ~£250

    Hi guys,

I've been having a browse around the popular auction site and it seems that socket 939 parts are still fetching absolutely stupid money!

What quad core system could I get for £200-£250?

The Q6600 seem to be going for around £100 second hand, so that would leave ram and a good motherboard. What can I get for this budget?

Really need motherboard suggestions, something solid, I've always gone with Abit and Asus in the past and they have been good. I use vista 64 anyway so 4GB ram would be useful, maybe I could squeeze in 8GB?

    Re: Cpu/Mobo/Ram for ~£250

Well 4GB of RAM is £35 so won't break your bank. £100 for the Q6600 (if you say so) leaves £115.

Asus P5Q-E as abit have thrown in the towel and don't make a P45.

You could also look at the biostar P45 (custompc's favourite) or DFI P45's (clunks favourite). All fall into that price range.

The RAM I mentioned is the corsair xms2 PC6400 from scan and no 8GB isn't worth it.

    Been offered the following...

    ASROCK SKT-775 P43D1600TWINS S/L 1600FSB

    Intel Q9250 (es)

    4GB (2GB x2) Generic PC6400

    All the above for £150.

    Worth it?

What is the CPU like? Can't seem to find a lot of info on it.

    Not heard of the chip

Generic RAM is OK as long as you don't want to overclock the chip very much.

Not a fan of Asrock or P43 really but it will get the job done.

Might be a silly typo for Q9400 / Q9300 / Q9100, all of which are inferior to the Q6600, apart from the Q9100 with 12MB cache

    It's 4.98*

    Re: Cpu/Mobo/Ram for ~£250

Definately not a typo, its from a mate off mine. I think he got the chip from abroad, this was before quad core was even released over here. I'm waiting to speak to him on msn to get some more info about it, he has the above setup all working together perfectly so it's less headache for me.

There is hardly anything on google showing up but I found this:

    Q9250 (12MB L2, 2.33GHz, 1333 FSB)

    at: http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...breakdown.html

Has a list of all the quad core cpus and its definately there.

Does it look like a decent chip?

    Based on this info.... 12MB L2, 2.33GHz, 1333 FSB

It will run at 3.0Ghz easily too.

    Re: Cpu/Mobo/Ram for ~£250

Sometimes engineering samples (from what I have seen) aren't that great and others are better than what gets released..

Sounds like a Q8200 with a bit more cache, it might run 3.0GHz but it will be harder to get there starting at 1333MHz. So it would be nice to hace decent RAM and a decent board.. niether of which the Asrock/generic ram are.

    Re: Cpu/Mobo/Ram for ~£250

The Biostar TPower l45 is awesome apparently (£110, I think), with some 4GB of PC2-6400 for £40 and the nice Q6600, you're saying you can get £100. On the spot.

Don't bother with 8GB of ram, extremely pointless. Unless you like overkill.

    Re: Cpu/Mobo/Ram for ~£250

How is the Biostar in comparison with the Asus P5Q?

If mate decides not to sell his bits, I'm looking at this...

    Asus motherboard P5Q SKT 775 Intel P45 1600FSB DDR2 ATX
    £90 Inc VAT [NEW]

    OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 Reaper HPC (2x2GB)
    £40 Inc VAT [NEW]

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 95W Energy Efficient 2.4GHz
    ~£100 [USED]

    Which is £230.

Will my Tagan 480W be ok?
