    Question CPU Cooler choice

Currently writing a pc upgrade list for the wife (she told me too...)

So I am looking at the following CPUs

    E8400
    Q9550
    i7 920

Can anyone recommend a CPU cooler from scan for the above CPUs?

If I got the E8400 or the 920, id like to overclock them to 3.6Ghz, maybe higher, just want them nice and cool, they will be kept in a Antec 900 case

    Thanks

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

As above. If you are just upgrading the CPU you need to stick with S775.

Good news is there a tonnes of coolers for S775

I would go with scythe as I always seem to. But probably better at the offerings from Xigmatek (on scan) and Thermalright (anywhere but I would go with scan).

    Have a look here

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

For socket 775 (E8400, Q9550), Thermalright Ultra 120mm Extreme is one of the best. For socket 1366 (core i7) the Akasa Nero for lower end, or the Thermalright Ultra, 1366 version.

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

According to FrostyTech the Sunbeamtech Core-Contact Freezer is the best performing cooler on the market for a socket 775 system.

Mind you there is not much difference between it and the likes of the TRUE.

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

The Akasa 965 is supposed to be the best budget cooler for around £10, similar to the OCZ Vanquisher that I use for a E2180 and its pretty quiet, but would probably make more noise for the CPUs you are considering overclockng.

For more money Zigmatek S1283, I got this for £15 on a Scan deal a few months ago and was pretty much silent in the case with a Q6600 running at stock speed, however its about £25 now so there may be better alternatives.

The Scythe Katana looks ok for mid price. It seems coolers with 120mm fans have gone up quite a bit recently.

The annoying thing is, there aren't if it's purely performance you are looking for. At £15 they were great, if you didn't like the fan you could change it and it was still cheaper than anything else. At £25 that's a bit annoying although the fan is very good.

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

I'm annoyed you can't get hold of the scythe Mine any more for £20 it was a great cooler and very easy to swap the fan (although the 100mm it came with was excellent )
There's a whole host of good coolers out there.

the stock intel cooler is quiet, when you first fit it and it's dust free + you have a core2duo running at stock + quiet fan control is correctly set on the motherboard + speed step is turned on. But that's not so much the cooler ability as the cpu's ability to run at low temps.

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

Currently I have 4GB DDR2, a Sata DVDRW and a HX620 PSU, I have not made a choice on CPU/Mobo yet and if I go for the 920, it's not much to sell my existing ram.

But looking at it, I think it will either be the E8400 or the 920 due to the Q9550 being more.

    Thanks

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

My mate uses a Zalman 9700 Tritium Cooler (the black one), he's very satisfied, it looks great too but you need a fairly large case for it.

    Re: CPU Cooler choice

Zalman 9700 Tritium Cooler is decent choice. If you can accept passive cooling, I would recommend cooler master hyper z600. Aslo, you need a big case. It is pretty heavy tower cooler.
