Re-installing Windows 7 after Mobo upgrade.

I'm thinking of upgrading my mobo/cpu/ram and this will require a win 7 re-activation.

Has anyone done this ? Is it painful of trivial ?

I have done it a few times on windows xp, i was connected to the internet and it was just a matter of a few clicks (activate over internet) and about 2 mins later it was sorted.

No problems, no pain, not much of a wait.

Trivial, but if your license is OEM then you're not entitled to install it to another machine in the manner that you're asking.

If you change your motherboard it's going to be stuck on Windows update for ages. However after it does, it does seem to work "ok". I would suggest for you to do a clean install though. If you only change CPU/RAM/graphics card then it will not require a reinstall.

Re: Re-installing Windows 7 after Mobo upgrade.

I swapped hard drives between two machines with identical motherboards to troubleshooting a problem I had and triggered re-activation on both machines. One phone call to an automated system. Enter a code on the phone then enter a new activation code on the PC. Only one question to answer.
How many PC's is this copy of windows 7 installed on?
    Correct answer = 1

Re: Re-installing Windows 7 after Mobo upgrade.

There is a utility within windows called sysprep, it removes all system drivers for all your hardware and restores it back as far as when you run the users setup etc, handy utility i did it recently when upgrading from q6600 setup to a i7 setup.
