Question Will a DVI male (monitor), VGA male (PC) cable work the other way around?

I have a PC with a new graphics card (ati 4870x2) with no VGA plug and 2 DVI ones and another round one (think it's SVideo?) - I want to plug a CRT into it, but naturally it's VGA plug.

Would this or something like it work? http://ebuyer.com/product/28641 - It says in the description it's for plugging a DVI monitor into a VGA graphics card, but can it be used the other way around too? I'm not too clear on how it works if it's one-way or either.

Your graphics card should come with DVI to VGA convertors, if OcUK didnt give them to you, ask for them.

Might be able to, but best to use the DVI-VGA adaptor that you got with your graphics card - usually you get at least two in the box.

the previous owner of the card probably kept hold of them when they sent it back faulty

I just phoned OCuk tech support on 01782 339 616 ( thanks, http://saynoto0870.com ..Scan are no better with this sadly also giving out premium rate numbers ) and apparently they don't always come with the card, it depends on the manufacturer. I had a look on http://overclockers.co.uk did a search for 4870 and the standalone 4870x2 (can't search for em directly, the search thing doesn't accept numbers it seems) cards available for purcahse don't seem to have em either, it only says it may include a DVI to HDMI adapter. I doubt they're stockpiling the relatively cheap VGA/DVI adapters or selling em off, so I guess I just need to buy one still

Though, still no one's answered my first question Will that cable work?

Re: Will a DVI male (monitor), VGA male (PC) cable work the other way around?

The cable should work as it is only a DVI-I to VGA cable, so will work either way. (There is no DAC or ADC to worry about).

Re: Will a DVI male (monitor), VGA male (PC) cable work the other way around?

The powercolour 4870x2 comes with an adaptor, the Sapphire 4870x2 comes with an adaptor, haven't found out about the gainward one yet.

EDIT: ah, that's because it has a native VGA port so doesn't need one.

So you should always be covered unless someone's pinched the adaptor.

The PC's page doesn't say, but I just popped open the case (yay no-screwdriver Antec 1200 panel) and it's got Sapphire in blue in a corner of the card with their logo. So I'd guess it's this one, has the same CGI girl on it too, looks exactly the same:

    !

See my above post, I think we were writing at the same time. It is the Sapphire one! :/

Got a link for evidence that the card does in fact come with an adapter(s)?

    Digital (to) Analogue Converter(tion)

    and consequently:

    Analogue (to) Digital Converter(tion)

You don't need to worry because you're sticking with analogue throughout. (Convertion happens in the graphics card).

Thanks.... according to that link it's meant to come with the full version of 3DMark Vantage too! And PowerDVD, TV-out cable, an HDMI adapter, S-video adapter, and 2 crossfire bridges! :/ Ok I am disappointed...

Re: Will a DVI male (monitor), VGA male (PC) cable work the other way around?

Well, a mitigating factor is that Sapphire are quite well known to give extra goodies in their review packs that you don't get at retail, *however* I've never known that to apply to adaptors. I myself have a 'retail-lite' sapphire card (X1950xt) which while light on additional software, did contain a full compliment of adaptors.

That I expect is more likely.

Does the card have the "sapphire" picture on the heat sink and Serial Number sticker on the back?

Or do the graphics on the cooler look like this?

As to if that lead will work on a CRT, NO
Well Probably not, for the simple reason that the majority of CRT had the VGA cable built in and it would have a male end to plug into the graphics card.
That cable is male to male so it'll not work

You need, DVI (male) to vga (female), here you go
