Woo! Not been on these boards regularly for a while, but started to get parts together for an upgrade from my skt 939 system.

Not going to be the most up to date gear, but I reckon a big improvement nevertheless, so far my parts are:

C2D e4600
OCZ ReaperX PC6400 (2x2gb)
Xigmatek NRP-MC651
Xigmatek Red Scorpion (with crossbow)

Ordered a Biostar TP45-HP today

Will be using other parts such as DVD-RW, HDD, gpu, etc.

Should be nice once I set it up.

C2D e4600 ?? did you get it 2nd hand? hope so, a e5200 would probably of been better.

Brand new e4600, but was purchased a few months back when PC World had their clearout

Im still waiting for a replacement cable from Scan for the Xigmatek though as the one in the box I received had a 2-pin round plug.

Hopefully, I can get it setup soon.

Just an update, I finally installed XP onto the rig and had a quick test run.

Apart from a low 12v reading, system seems to run cool and relatively quiet.

Using the Cavalier 3 case from my previous rig and some other parts. it's now upgraded to:

Biostar TP45-HP
OCZ ReaperX (2x2gb)
e4600 with Xigmatek Red scorpion
Xigmatek NRP-MC651
xfx 9600gt Alphadog edition
X-fi Fatal1ty
Samsung F1 500gb

Running everything at stock for now as I've no idea about OC'ing a C2D nor nVidia gpu (Been a long time user of AMD and ATI )

Overclocking C2D couldn't be easier just ramp up the FSB until its unstable then give it a bit more voltage, lather, rinse, repeat. Don't forget to knock your memory down to a 1:1 divider and loosen off the timings so it doesn't limit your overclock testing, then once your happy with a particular clock speed you can tighten up the timings and/or change the divider.

Umm quick look at the pic and something is wrong with you're settings
FSB is only set to 200mhz x6 = 1.2ghz
should be
fsb 200mhz x12 = 2.4ghz

I'm guessing you've got intel speedstep turned on in the BIOS. (or sometimes called EIST)
You'll want to turn that off for finding an overclock and general stress testing.
Once you've found a stable overclock you're happy with then you can turn that back on. (it slows down the cpu by reducing the multiplier when it has no demand on it.)

Left everything on default/auto so I'm guessing yes speedstep is on.
Will have a closer look at the options and turn it off. I'll need to read more about the CPU voltage though as it's different to what I thought (red and green values of +0.xx v, etc)

Must admit I just left my cpu voltage on automatic control and I got my e6600 up to 3ghz without any problems, should be able to get it higher but I've yet to find anything that is held up/suffers at that speed.

I was more daring in my first overclocking attemps. Just read the manual a bit on my board and started playing with every setting Got it to 3.6GHz with high temps and 3.4GHz at very good temps

As long as the volts don't go too high I'd recommend changing lots of things if you want learn what's going on and what breaks things

Feel a HJ coming on... - am looking at E5200 for upgrade but having more difficulty in finding a reasonably priced Mobo to overclock this on (don't want to raise voltages much if at all) and just a FSB to get 3Ghz will make me very happy!

A previous AsRock user I want to move from them to probably Gigabyte and preferably PCI-E 2.0 to use a 4830 to its full potential. Budget of around £70 seem enough for this? Also looking at Artic Freezer 64 Pro for cooling.

With Ram, do the latency timings 5-5-5-18 for example aid or hinder overclocking?

The price has recently gone up though as it was under £50 at Ebuyer!!

It is a decent overclocker. PCI-E 2.0 does not make much difference in reality with a card like an HD4830 - perhaps it might if you were going for a HD4870X2 for example.
Most people still use PCI-E 1.0 16x and 8x motherboards.

Turned off Speedstep and c1e last night and the cpu seemed to be at stock speed (x12).
However, I noticed the ram divider is still at 1:2 (ram running at 400mhz.)

One of two things either 1:2 is actual speed so effectively 1:1 (as DDR is double data rate) so 200x2 = 400MHz or the divider is actually at 1:2 so 200x2=400 then DDR so 400x2=800MHz

If CPUZ says DRAM Frequency is 400MHz then your actually running at 800MHz.
