    Phenom II 940 benchmarked

Nice one OCW - looks like this could be a contender for gaming after all.

Madduck, will you literally be able to just drop a Phemon II into your current motherboard?

    Re: Phenom II 940 benchmarked

    Yes he will.

This is a really good time for AMD to hit home some mid-high range processors - Intel's mid-range series aren't out for another year, and their last one is end-of line making people nervous about investing in it.

I am going to be doing a new build next year and will have to give this CPU some serious thought.

but yes. 2 minute upgrade and then the current 9850 can either be sold or stuck in my 690G media centre, another 2 minute upgrade.

i could even drop one of the am3 processors in, in preparation for a future motherboard upgrade if i had the patience to wait until they turn up. but i dont

    Re: Phenom II 940 benchmarked

Looks good, tempted to get one when they arrive, depending on if they will just go nicely into a AM2 motherboard or will I need an AM2+ motherboard, I'm aware that if it works with AM2 board the HT link speed will be decreased.

I'll have to put them here as I can't edit my profile yet. The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 which has an nforce 430 chipset.

Wow, looks like it will easily match or beat the same priced Intel. The Intel cpus that they compared it to cost over double... and it was only slightly behind them for most things!

too early to tell with that im afraid, gigabyte havent even updated my mobo's compatibility list for the phenom II's yet and i know for a fact they will work. saying that it took them 5 months to get a stable bios out for the 9850 so you cant rush them

its a worry that you havent had a new bios since march though. they may just not bother even if they could

Yeah, if you can say one thing about gigabyte it's that they definately take there time with things, and it doesn't always yield better results either
