Core Duo multiplier not fixed.

Hi guys so i was looking to finally overclock my system (details in my user's system) and i found the CPU multiplier to be changing between 6 and 7. Vcore also seems to fluctuate a bit.





Checked the bios and the multiplier rate changer option was disabled so i turned it on and set the multiplier to 7 but its still doing it.

Thats not normal is it? any way to fix it to 7?

tis intel speedstep, it underclocks the processor when not under load

if you're OCing then turn it off

it could be listed in the BIOS as EIST or C1E IIRC (someone will correct me if i'm wrong)

Thanks TAKTAK spot on , had the speedstep option disabled in the bios but i didnt know C1E was something similar.



So what sort safe idle temps would i be looking to with my processor?

personally, i would aim for 60c or under (for load temps) idle temps don't matter really, it's load temps that you need to watch out for.

i think C1E drops the multi (and vCore?)
and EIST (enhanced intel speedstep tech) drops the FSB and vCore

basically just makes it use less juice

Well at 2450MHz (350*7) my load temps (using ORTHOS) are around 53º so i guess i leave it like that for now.

The memory is running at 1:1 so that leaves me a fair bit bellow the rated 800MHz.

Might look to improve the timings a bit, currently using the memory rated values.

What values should i look at bellow 4-4-4-12?

you don't really get much benefit from tighter timings than that, just the e-peen factor.

also, what CPU cooler are you using?

ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro expected better temps but oh well...

Might look into removing one of the case fans its a tad close to the cpu cooler and might be affecting it.

Speedstep doesn't effect your overclocks, it simply drops the multiplier when the CPU is idle so it doesn't waste energy. So it's best to keep it enabled unless it is actually effecting your performance when you're pushing the CPU hard.
