Question £5k and £1k new build thoughts please???

    Hey all,

I've been browsing the forums for some time now and I'm looking at a couple of PC builds that I would like this communities opinion on.

I have £5k to spend on one machine £1k to spend on another.

The £5k one is for gaming at my dads house (would like 5 monitors with this) while the £1k one is a gaming rig for my mums house (don't need monitor for this one)........ My parents separation is good for something.... mostly guilt money from my dad for sleeping with
    another woman!!!

Now I'm not going to say to my dad don't worry you don't need to spend all that so I want to squeeze as much tech into a PC as possible for both budgets.

Don't really want a water cooled build either as I don't have a clue about putting one of those together!!

I've done a couple pre-builds on Scan but seeing as I'm (well, my guilt stricken dad) spending a fair bit I want to be sure to get the best parts.

Thanks and look forward to hearing your thoughts..

LOL i love how your taking advantage of your guilt ridden dad.

tbh, why do u you need 5 monitors? and 5k on a pc is just way too much. You could quite easily get a top spec pc (quad core, 2xgtx280, 4gb ram etc) for half that money!

J/K - Seriously though I would say your best holding out for the i7 Intel Nehalem chips as dropping that amount of money on a system right now would just seem silly (or at least to me anyway), also have you asked yourself, what can you do on a £5000 system that a £2000 system wouldn't do??

Re: £5k and £1k new build thoughts please???

5 monitors? Do you want these for a particular reason, or do you simply want large screen and high resolution?
You could, of course, get 3 x 30" monitors at 2560x1600 each, which i suppose you'd rotate onto their side and stack side by side, giving you 4800 x 2560 which (in terms of ratio) is a little wider than standard widescreen but i'd guess a modern graphics solution could be made to work.
Whether or not it'd have enough graphics grunt for that or not is another question...
    I think you'd need a dual GTX280 set-up just for Windows Solitaire....

Seriously though, out of £5k i'd very much invest a minimum of £2.5k on the peripherals.... monitors, speakers, hell... even a quality desk and chair would be a worthwhile investment!

Re: £5k and £1k new build thoughts please???

I spec'd up a 5k build for someone a while back, it was something like
    Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
    Asus Striker II Extreme
    4GB (2x2gb) OCZ Reaper DDR3 1800mhz
    2x EVGA GTX280 SC 1GB
    OCZ 1000W EliteXstream
    3x 60GB OCZ Core Series v2
1x 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
    Coolermaster Stacker 832
    Dell 30" 3008WFP
    1x LG GGW-H20L multi writer
    1x Samsung SH-S223D dvd
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit Retail
    Logitech MX revolution
    Logitech G15 rev.2
    Auzentech X-Fi
    Thermalright Ultra 120
Couple of extra bits and pieces

Obviously you could drop the 30" monster monitor and go for 3 smallers ones for the same price. And many of the components you are paying over the odds for - go for a non-extreme CPU and maybe DD2 ram etc.

That was also a build for NOW. If you can wait SSDs are improving very quickly, and the whole Core i7, X58 thing is happening in a month or two.

Re: £5k and £1k new build thoughts please???

Just give the guys at scan a call and ask them to make you a £5000 pc with 3 monitors. They will sort out the best spec for you...

If you really want to spend £5k, why not get something decent (eg. a car), rather than just a PC...

Re: £5k and £1k new build thoughts please???

I know its none of my business, but personally you should have just said that you had up to 5k to spend on a system, by giving a little insight in to your personal life, motives and reasons behind getting the system you should have expected that people would flame and burn you,

But that aside are you wanting to build it your self or buy a pre-build?

If you go with a pre-build then i would say take a look on either of these sites to see if anything takes your fancy:

    www.cougar-extreme.co.uk
    www.yoyotech.co.uk
    www.dell.co.uk
    www.scan.co.uk
    www.alienware.co.uk
    www.pcspecialist.co.uk
    www.wired2fire.co.uk
    www.cube247.co.uk
    www.computerplanet.co.uk

Not all of them are fantastic but there should be enough different setups you can put together to keep you buys for hours (and off these forums j/k).

Guys, this is wandering a little close to getting the mods involved.
    Let's not hassle the guy.

That said, perhaps nerdgeek you'd be best off not mentioning anything else from your personal life.

It's a shame Vadim computers went down the pan, they had some £20k+ setups on there iirc.

Think some people being a bit harsh. We dont know his age or situation, might be quite young. You might not want to spend 5k on a pc build nerdgeek, if your thinking it will make you feel better. It might for a short while, but you will soon go back to how you were feeling. If you REALLY do want to spend 5k, build it yourself as it will save you abit of money. Im sure some people on here would reccommend some parts for you.

with that amount to spend (overlooking any personal situations, or how you come by it)

i would wait till nehalem (core i7) is released....
