    what are these for then ?

    they have USB3 molded into them .... they run upto a crevis so cant tell what they are connected too ?

    Classy.

    You plug them into the USB3 out on the back of your case, they'll provide USB3 to the front of case connectors.

    Early USB 3.0 compatible motherboards had no USB 3.0 front panel headers, which meant that the USB 3.0 ports on the front of the case had to be connected to the i/o ports on the back of the motherboard/case instead.

    Yeah, if your motherboard has a USB3 header (most P67s and Z68s above about £100 do), you could eliminate some clutter by plugging the front ports straight into the motherboard.
