    Recommend me a hard drive?

    Hi Guys,

Looking for a new HDD to store all my media on, either 500, 640 or 750GB. Just really looking for a good price/performance balance, do you have any recommendations? Annoyingly there seems to be a lot on scan right now that are on pre-order!

Also, if I put all my media on the new one, would there be any benefit to setting my 250GB seagates up in RAID0? Would there be a notable difference in performance or is it a bit pointless?

    Thanks!!

Re: Recommend me a hard drive?

Samsung Drives generally have a very good price/performance. I've been using one of the older 400gb models and its significantly quieter than the seagate one i have and runs coooler, even though its in a position with much less airflow in my case...

The new F1 drives have been getting good reviews...

Novatech have some good prices on teh 500gb, 750 and 1tb drives and free postage:

Re: Recommend me a hard drive?

The Western Digital 640gb AAKS is very good IMO, good speed and very quiet (cant even hear it, 250gb aaks is making noise). Samsungs are good so either one, the AAKS seemed to have jumped in price as i remember it being only £40 when i bought it.

Fort storing films and stuff, where you dont need outright speed, Hitachi are top value tbh.

Re: Recommend me a hard drive?

Awesome, thanks for the advice guys. Seems like the spinpoints get quite a lot of praise, think I might get the 750GB one that sjhujh posted the link to...

What about the RAID? What do you think on that front?

Re: Recommend me a hard drive?

I vote Samsung. I'm using 2 500GB HD502IJ drives. Great drives! Should be fine to use for RAID, assuming you have a RAID capable motherboard/add-in card.

I do indeed! But is the difference in performance worth the effort/loss of 250GB?!

Why would you lose 250GB? As for the RAID performance, I use mine as seperate drives so I'm not sure. I know that they are fast drives though, they run cool and are quiet - even when seeking.
