    Overclocking the ATI HD4850

Further to this thread http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...gtx-125-a.html I have done some overclocking of my HD4850 and got a fair bit out of it.

Using the ATI catalyst auto tune thingy it recommend upping the core from 625MHz to 690MHz, which is fairly good, and the Memory from 993MHz to 1190MHz (= 2380MHz DDR), which is an awesome boost

I have been running a few games over the last couple of days at these speeds and everything is fine so far, not a hitch in sight. I may see how much further it'll go later on.

Anyone else been overclocking their 4850? or even a 4870???

I am getting a 4850, but would not want to overclock it that far, though it porbally can do it fine, bit of extra heat though

Whats the difference in performance though? Is it actually worth overclocking right now or is it just getting you an extra 2 fps.

    Re: Overclocking the ATI HD4850

These card run really hot, if I get one I'll be watercooling it. I know the card will take the heat but it offloads it to the PC case, water will take it outside. I'd imagine the card is fast enough without overclocking (apart from the usual crysis crisis!) but if you can get free extra FPS why not

    Re: Overclocking the ATI HD4850

My mate has got his 4850 running at 740MHz (hacked MSI BIOS) stable. but that's includes raising the fan to about 50% and having 2x 120mm fans blowing on it with the side of the case off. Not sure what the memory is at; about 1150MHz I think.

    Re: Overclocking the ATI HD4850

Default fan speeds are low on these cards, hence heat. If you save a catalyst profile you can edit the fan settings (it's an xml file) and up the speed which really drops temps, without needing to touch the bios.

    Re: Overclocking the ATI HD4850

I've just read about changing the fan speed, and will probably give that a shot soon, as at the moment the temps get up to 87 degrees, which is a tad hot. But seems to be ok so far... Outside of playing Crysis I don't have it running overclocked anyway, as there's little to no need in anything else...

    Re: Overclocking the ATI HD4850

An aftermarket cooler would give you better results with overclocing, and be quieter.

The Akasa Neo Vortexx is what I will be using (it's compatible with Xfire), but the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 will also fit the 48xx range

    Re: Overclocking the ATI HD4850

710/1150 with a vortexx. will start to sneak the gpu clock up more when i get a fully working main rig again. heat is not an issue with this card, idles at 35 and doest get to 60 under load. going to voltmod it i think... 900 has a nice ring to it wouldnt you say? we shall see

anyone had any decent results from simply re-applying TIM? I know when they first came out someone out there claimed drops from 80C to 30-odd (i think) which i find laughable.

Anyone here with an ounce of credibility done it yet?

I highly doubt it, at best maybe a 5ºC difference at load I would have thought.

he's a liar. reapplication of paste and setting the fan at 100% maybe...

i have no credibility but when i put mx2 on before the vorexx arrived i noticed only a few degrees of difference - it wasnt actually too bad in the first place to be honest. wasnt glooped on like a lot of cards

    Re: Overclocking the ATI HD4850

I have the IceQ TurboX by HIS (factory overclocked). 685MHz clock, 2.2GHz effective memory clock. Runs much cooler than the stock model even with these clocks. I hear it also uses less power thanks to a more energy efficient board. Someone mentioned fan speed needs to be adjusted using an XML file - it can now be adjusted directly from the CCC.
