600W+ PSU for i7 rig

Hi. i have took the plunge and ordered a i7 rig with a 260gtx card(216 core version) but im without a PSU as the Enermax 625W PSU is out of stock and will be for a while so im wondering whats a good alternative at around the same price point.

i was considering the corsair 620w but that's gone up in price alot and is now around £108 as a posed to it being in the £80 it once was not too long ago.

as well as powering up a 260gtx along with the mobo and i7 gear, i will be powering up between 4-5 hdd's as well as over 6 120mm cooling fans

If you were considering the Corsair HX620 then check out the Seasonic M12 600W (same PSU or very very similar Seasonic make the innards of the corsair don't you know )

Only thing worth checking is if it comes with 8pin PCIe power cables or not (it has 2 PCIe according to the specs but doesn't say how many pins) just checking Seasonics site now waiting for a pdf load...

Edit: 6 pin only and from the images on their site it has an extra fan as well over the HX620 maybe they are not quite as similar as i supposed but still very good PSU

do i need a 8pin one? does the 260gtx come with a 6pin to 8pin adaptor? would an adaptor mess up the graphics card is better off not using one?

Also take note that those Silverstone ones have fans (Yong Lin fans) that make noise at cold temperatures. I've got my one packed and ready for Scan to pick it up for RMA as it's the 2nd one that has the fan problem. The fans are temperature controlled and in my room it's 12c and at that temperature the fans temp controller isn't giving it enough volts to start but enough to vibrate/buzz. Real annoying problem as I thought I just had a dud fan on my first one. But the Corsairs HX520/620 worked without problems at those temperatures, my 400W FSP one stays silent too and my Coolermaster M700W had no problems enduring those winter temperatures. Your rooms probably warmer than mine anyway but I thought I'd share that piece of info.


IIRC the GTX260's use 2 x 6 pins. The GTX280 uses 1 x 6 and 1 x 8 pins. Adaptors provide the needed power but it's always best to use the PCI-E ones.

All depends. I recommend checking out 80Plus and just check which PSU gives a better efficiency at 400-300w.

Enermax or Seasonic, both a good choice. Seasonic is more expensive though

How expensive? First M12D PSU I seen is £180 for the 750w version (might be 700 can't remember) so I see the 800w one being £200+ or something like that.

The new M12D's are very good though, but very expensive too. The PSU fan alone is £20~.

The Modu82+? God damn...
The problem with the one I have now is it's real noisy. The PSU fan doesn't like cold temperatures even though it's well within the operating temperature range (0-40c). It works but the fan is vibrating, which vibrates the case and side panels.....
This continues until I load a game or something stressing to warm the PSU and get the fan running. My cheapy FSP psu works fine though and is even more silent.

i got my new i7 gear last night. im going to build it al tonight after work. i cant wait! thanks guys for all your advice. hope everything goes well
