P5K premium & Q6600 OCing

first time I'm asking for advice in these forums so if I've missed anything out please tell me..
Firstly my specs...

Q6600 atm @ 3ghz
ASUS P5k Premium
4gb Team Elite DDR2-800mhz PC6400
Tuniq Tower120 with a Noctua P12
Antec P182
Corsair TX750

So far I've managed to get a stable 3ghz out of it (this is the setting its been on since i built the PC) To achieve this i've turned off all of the stuff in the CPU config menu eg. Execute disable bit etc. The FSB has been set to 333*9, i'm giving the chip 1.2 volts. as far as the CPU is concerned this is all i have done. The mem is set to 800mhz, with 5-5-5-15 with 1.8 volts (the standard)

i wanted to get 3.4, but i stumbled at 3.2... I tried this by upping my FSB to 355... when this didn't come out stable i increased the northbridge voltage to 1.4...

Am i doing something very wrong? My trmps were 65 in prime on small FFT's just before the system crashed.. Or have i just reached the limit of what the Tuniq tower will let me do? have been thinking recently that i should swap it for a true with the Noctua P12 on it...

You will need to increase the CPU voltage potentially or you may be pushing the memory to far for its settings if you are not changing them)

Okay so first guess goes to the memory unless it is not linked to the CPU which is unlikely then as you increase the FSB the memory speed increases as well. If it was running at 800MHz at a FSB of 333MHz then it was using a divider of 6:5 (1.2:1) when you up the FSB to say 350MHz this divider remains the same so your memory speed would jump to 840MHz which maybe enough to make the system unstable, increase the memory voltage a bit maybe to 2v and see if that solves the problem.

If it is CPU voltage then just give it a bit more, since you are currently at 1.2v take it up to 1.35v (will do the processor no harm you could go up to 1.5v without issue gets hot mind!)

I am suprised you couldnt do 3ghz on stock voltages.

ive got a p5k-e/wi-fi with a q6600 and am currently @ 3.2ghz (400*8) with cpu voltage @ 1.272 (in cpu-z not bios), stock northbridge voltage and geil ultra 2gb ram @ 3-4-3-12. Also what is your VID on your q6600, mine is 1.325 which is preety high. If yours is lower i would expect a higher o/c than what you have acheived from a p5k premium.

Its running preety hot but thats only because i have a small case with 2 fans.

Thanks for the replies guys... The VID of my chip is 1.3v, I was able to 3ghz while still undervolting the processor, as I got 3ghz stable for 12 hours prime with 1.2v going through it.

I think I've worked out that the memory is what has been causing me problems as last night when I tried 3.3 using 367x9 to get 3.3 the mem was running 1007mhz and the system crashed after 12 minutes priming, this morning I tried the memory at 755mhz and its been priming stable since 10 this morning and still going... so I think I may need to either overvolt the mem if I want to oc that as well as the CPU or just keep the mem at 800 or bellow (alternatively I could buy better memory)...

But something that made me scratch my head last night was that I ran memtest for 2 hours with the mem set 1066 giving it 1.85 volts and it was stable... does this mean memtest isn't that great an indicator of memory stability?

I've hit a peak temp of 67 this morning on the hottest core, with my parents sauna like heating, what do people think, am I stressing the CPU too much?

Oh also I'm now giving the CPU 1.32volts, so I'm not too far above my VID

i see, i think you are rgiht becasue u want to aim for a fsb:ram ratio of 1:1, so underclocking your ddr-800 to 734mhz (as you have fsb @ 367mhz) but keeping the ram voltage stock, should make the system more stable

edit:

well 67 degrees isnt bad, i would aim to keep the hottest core below 70, even though the max temp is 100. Also keep in mind that in the summer you may have to reduce the overclock because of the higher ambient temperature. Just out of interest, wot is the room temperature?

no idea, pretty hot, I'm sweating a little (I'm pretty slim so it's not a health issue) I'd hazard about 20-21? I think the Tuniq might also be reaching its limit, with the three heat pipes it seems it might be more a dual core heatsink than a quad one unlike the TRUE, perhaps? I haven't seen many people using the Tuniq with quad core CPU's most seem to be using the TRUE.

If my hunch is right and the temperature being shown as the motherboard in Everest is the ambient inside the case its 33c then I have a deltaT of about 34 degrees....

I was having a gander at some other cases and looking the methods used for cooling in them and came across the silverstone fortress FT-01... Thought that's a nice looking case, but more intriguing was the fan set up... This is a positive pressure case rather than a negative pressure one like the P182, so I decided to flip the top exhust and turn it into a intake to mimic the FT-01 set up and its dropped the temp at full load of the CPU from 68 to 65 degrees, although this dosen't sound like much, to get 68 degrees I had the two rear fans at medium, now they are and at low, at medium the drop is to 61, which is 6 degrees by simply flipping one of the exhausts to an intake, the mobo temp has dropped even more to 27 instead of 39...

Sorry just felt the need to share the results of my experiment...
