Power supply requirements?
Hi folks,
Sorry if there are guides on here!
I'm combining my server and desktop machine as my use of the machines has changed.
So basically I'm wanting to know if a Tagan 480W PSU will cope with the following setup;
- C2D E6300 not overclocked
- 2GB Corsair RAM not overclocked
- 6 HDDs, all 7200rpm (sizes from 320Gb to 1TB)
- Radeon 4850
- RAID card
- 3x120mm fans
It's really just a check :)
Thanks in advance,
Paul.
Re: Power supply requirements?
PSU Watt Calculator
Do you plan on upgrading in the near future?
Re: Power supply requirements?
PSU calculators are notoriously dodgy at times
but after a quick check it comes out with 408w which is about right for a c2d cpu a 4850 and 6 hdd's
you "should" be ok and a tagan psu "should not" take anything with it if it dies

Even 480W is overkill for that. Worry not.

:)
You'd be suprised how much the system actually uses.

No, really, it's more than enough
My old server is much more hungry (e.g. Pentium-D, 8 disks) but manages fine with a 500W PSU - and by my maths only uses about half of it
The only big diff here is the graphics card, I suppose
Re: Power supply requirements?
Depends how old it is. If the Tagan PSU is a couple of years old, I reckon you should replace it. The caps inside them on mine and someone else on this forum were knackered, but both our PSUs were about 4 years old.
As a guide, my E8400+4gig+2xHDD+HD4850+24"LCD+24port ethernet switch+UPS takes a total of about 180 watts when idle and I think about 240 watts under load. I used an Aldi wattmeter thing to measure it. HDDs only add a few watts when running - it's the powerup which stresses PSUs, and for that I'd guess you could only trust a decent brand. I dont consider Tagan to be decent - I took my old PSU apart and the layout/workmanship/parts/construction looked quite bad.
Re: Power supply requirements?
This is a rough guess but I imagine your spec wont use much more then 300watts at load so I would not worry. Plus Tagans are generally decent psu's so it should be fine.
Re: Power supply requirements?
Thanks everyone. My server is currently running with a Tagan 420W supply and the main box with a Tagan 480W I think and yep they're a couple of years old. The case is a Coolermaster stacker so I can actually put 2 PSUs in it but think a single one would be more efficient.
Thanks again for the replies!
