GPU temperatures....

Well i know gpu's are designed to withstand heat but in my opinion this is to much. I get 110C while playing Left4Dead, i noticed it as i alt tabed out to check on skype and it was yellow lol. I knew ati cards were hot but a 9800GTX being hotter and its having help from extra fan on it, not good.

Any ideas why it could be so hot? And how bad is it on the life of the card?.

once my 8800GTX ran at about 100^C and it is not good, but apparently they CAN run upto 150^C

do you have good ventilation overall such as case fans etc??
you should put an exhaust fan in.

When you say exhaust fan do you mean shove a fan on the back of the case and suck air out of the card?. Ventilation is good, loads of fans and steady airflow so it could just well be a build up of dust, will give it a good blast tomorrow.

did you put an aftermarket cooler on?

Also what's the fan speed at. My one never used to reach those temperatures when playing CoD4 at max settings.

110C is indeed rare for a 9800gtx. IIRC the stock cooler is quite decent. Give it a good clean and see how the temps are after.

It is on stock cooling, i used a zalman fan mount to put a fan on the side of it to blow air onto the PCB etc. Ill go sleep and try and sort it in the morning.

Fan speed on idle is 35% but on load its atleast 65%, its on auto and just installed evga precision again and its noisy as hell so i tried keeping it at 60% and temp rose a few degrees lol. My 8800GTS was like 60c load with fan at 50/55% so its alot of difference.

your kiddin right? They can take 110-120 usually i think hes in the danger zone atm. As mentioned clear the dust out of it and try getting some airflow over the back of the card

yeah must have been 105 then, but yeah i think there must have been a problem with your one because that is far too high and will have long term damage...
make sure you turn the fans up to the max when you play because sometimes i forget to turn it up and i can hear the fan running faster and a flow of hot air coming from the exhaust fans.

also i doubt that its dust, the card is pretty new and my cards are older and dust doesn't affect it. plus like someone said, the stock cooling is actually pretty good...

but you dont know how well his case deals with dust or the condition of the room the computer is in (no offense of course) he may have pets. I know i get a lot of dog hair in mine when im at home.

Saying all this i would still tend to agree with you, dust blockage is unlikely however its a simple thing to check before rushing out to buy after market cooling.

What are the rest of the temps in your case like?

this deffo sounds like bad airflow. My 8800GT OC2 gets up to about 82C and that is too hot for me. Whoever said 150C must be mistaken because no standard PCB could take that.

The PCB's during mnufacture are exposed to that kind of heat.
Firstly once the surface mount parts are placed and cured. The oven exceeds that temperature.
Then, once any 'through hole' parts are placed (large caps, coils etc), the board id then flow soldered. This also occassionally exceeds this temperature.

PCB's of this nature, are designed to withstand higher temperatures.

Do have pets but i cleared my case out of dust yesturday (compressed air case/filters). Id say the case cooling is good with 6 case fans, 3 intake and 3 out. I will spray the card in about 5 mins and will report back.

PS: On silkroad(just downloaded it) i was getting 85C after 5mins and sro is NOT demanding game at all.

those temps do indeed seem toasty. Not even my old 4870 used to run that hot (80* at most)

Either fault cooler/bad airflow or needs a clean.
