    new sata drive not working

just got this drive courtesy of scan, nice fast delivery but...

    i can't get it working.

atm i have an IDE drive and i'm trying to get this new sata drive to work but it doesn't look like it's being detected. it's not appearing in my computer, nor in disk management.

    any ideas?

Re: new sata drive not working

If you have motherboard with SATA 150 then your hard drive might need a jumper to turn it from SATA 300 to SATA 150.

Re: new sata drive not working

Nope it doesn't appear in the BIOS and I'm pretty sure my motherboard supports SATA 300.

I didn't want to mention it because I think I already know the answer but when I tried to install vista onto it, it stopped halfway through the installation, saying I was missing files or something and that all the installation files would be removed - or something to that effect.

Ever since that happened, I haven't been able to install Vista on it again, as it doesn't come up in the box when I'm asked to select a hard drive...

Re: new sata drive not working

Can you hear it power up when your machine boots?
Have you tried connecting it to a different SATA port on your motherboard?

Re: new sata drive not working

Could it possibly be the cable?

Re: new sata drive not working

Hard drive is whirring when I start the pc up.

SATA is enabled in the bios.

I've tried changing the port the SATA cable is plugged into.

The thing is I know it *was* working, because I was installing Vista on it - but then the installation stopped halfway through, and now it isn't working.

It's not plugged in atm, I tried for ages last night to make it work :/

Re: new sata drive not working

Hearing how it did work and now doesn't seems like you broke it. Can you try it in a different machine?

Re: new sata drive not working

Nope, this pc is the only one that supports SATA.

It does seem that way doesn't it... although I'd rather think that it was the Vista installation that buggered it up

Re: new sata drive not working

Try changing the drive cable. Installing an OS system on it is unlikely to cause it to disappear ffrom the bios. Either the cable is damaged/not connected correctly or the drive has failed.

I'll probably need to buy a new cable then - thanks for the help.
