Question monitor-for design, gaming, watching DVDs-want to have all in one.need your advice

Hello everyone, I’m newby here. Need your advice.
Want to buy monitor - for work/design/, gaming and watching DVDs- want to have all in one because the living space and “office” all in one too . Really, don’t know how to start…of course the cheaper the better, but how cheap it can be to not to loose quality.
Just looked at the new BenQ Full HD monitor E2200HDA 16:9 , is it really good?

When you say design what do you mean? If it is colour critical work then I'm afraid you are going to need to spend a bit more than you might want to (Like £300+).

On the whole a 1920*1200 (24"+ and one 22") or 1920*1080 (22", 23" and 24") screen are good resolutions to be considering the is also a couple of monitors available with the strange resolution of 2048*1152 both 23" (Samsung available for ~£175 and a Dell for £210) if you watch the screen from any distance (for movies) then bigger screen (physical size not resolution) will be better.

Also if you will be watching movies will it be straight on or will you be at an angle if at an angle then the more expensive VA or IPS screens maybe better for you.

Have you considered a HD-TV to get the high resolution you will probably need to be looking at ~32" which may be a bit big for everyday working.

Finally have a look here http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ they have a lot of info on the different panels their strengths and weaknesses etc and a healthy number of reviews (obviuously not every monitor has been reviewed but the is a good selection)

Thanks a lot for helping me out :-)
First by design I meant polygraphy, mainly ID stuff… well, I know it’s better to have good monitor for work and HD-TV for other things, but there is a situation ive got to deal with.
“… Interestingly though, BenQ said that it believes 16:9 displays will account for up to 30 percent of the LCD panel market (for PCs) in 2009 and expects that share to grow to over 50 percent the following year. The company's representatives said that the cost advantage of creating 16:9 panels is significant because all TV panels are manufactured with the same aspect ratio.”
What do you think about this? I don’t really see what is so special about 1,920 x 1,080 native resolutions?
Thanks for link as well, very informative :-).
Still thinking what is decent monitor which could serve my purposes and at least have a good if not the best quality (in short good Value for less Money) .

Re: monitor-for design, gaming, watching DVDs-want to have all in one.need your advice

1920x1080 is special because it is the resolution that is used by consoles and TV shows (and some movies)
Manufacturers assume that users don't want to pay extra for the 120 vertical lines of pixels which would only display as black border when playing (console) games or watching movies.

I personally think it is because people accepted 1280x1024 (very old days), then 1680x1050 (old days) and automatically assume that people don't need more than 10xx vertical resolution.

Well, back to recommendations. I don't know about you, but any LCD monitor in my family will be used for a minimum of 5 years (the oldest ran for 10 years before failing).

So the difference between a cheap "good value" monitor and a very good "quality" monitor would be approximately 10p a day. And perhaps the temptation of getting a new (better) monitor quicker would push the price difference closer to zero.

BenQ, LG, NEC, Dell all make quality PVA panel monitors which the advantages over TN is quite huge. (Look it up yourself).

I have a Dell Ultrasharp 2709W, very good quality monitor which cost me £385 just two months ago. Once you've used one you won't EVER go back to TN monitors.
