Ultima 90 install + temps
I've just installed my new Ultima 90 Heatsink along with an Akasa Amber 92mm fan. Here's how it went:
The heatsink:

The base:

Before the upgrade:

Motherboard removed from case:

TIM left by stock cooler. I removed this with Arcticlean. Practised on the stock cooler, first. It has a strong smell that stuff - use it in a well ventilated area! Found it's best to wipe off as much as possible using a piece of kitchen roll / lint-free cloth then use step one and leave for about a minute. Wipe away what's left unlit dry. Then, put a few drops of step 2 onto the surface and wipe away until dry. I forgot to take pictures of applying MX2, sorry :embarrassed:

CPU, nice and clean ready for MX2 with the first bracket attached. A little close to the capacitors, but not touching.:

Both brackets installed:

Heatsink attached and motherboard back in case. Just have to re-attach cables + graphics card now...

Everything back in place and fan attached to heatsink:

Big difference. It appears to be keeping the CPU below the minimum detectable temperature, even when loaded with the new heatsink! Room temp in the area of 22C, according to thermometer built into clock. How I applied MX2.
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
I'm not being stupid but should it be facing >>> blowing air <<<?
Edit: Looking at it only seems like it can go the way you put it in. Just used to my Arctic Freezer 7 Pro
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
It's not faceing blowing air, the top fan scuks air our of the case.
in an antec 900 it's better to have the cooler pointing up as he has mounted it as the top fan has greater air flow than the rear 120mm fan.
It could easisly be faceing the other way on this motherboard as there is no mosfet cooler to get in the way.
But he really does need to spend a bit of time tidying up the cables ;)
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
Yeah, the big fan on the top is an output fan. Heat rises so air is blown up through the heatsink. I could have put it in facing the rear fan, but I decided on this. And yes, I do need to tidy cables, but I'm not looking forward to it lol.

Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
Nice temp resaults, suprised you didn't put a 120mm on it.
ps is that a PWM fan?
I'm using a coolermaster 92mm PWM fan on mine (case is too narrow for a 120mm on the ultima90 :( ) Not too bad, gets a little loud if it has to rev up to high speeds but it very rearly does that.
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
Its a 3 pin fan (not PWM) so it's always on full speed. Quiet though - doesn't sound any louder than the stock cooler. Not noticeable alongside the fans on the 900.
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
Watercooled just because it is a 3 pin fan doesn't mean that it has to run full speed all the time you just need to tell the BIOS that it needs to control via voltage rather than PWM (it may already be doing it) those Akasa Amber 92mm are nice and quiet though :D
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
No I don't think my motherboard can alter fan voltages so it's full speed. I could be wrong, though - I'll have to check. But, my mobo has a 4 pin header.
Edit: just looked in the BIOS - fan is spinning at ~1400 RPM (full sped) even with CPU Smart Fan Control enabled.
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
yeah but on a 4 pin fan the 3 pins are the same just with the aded 4th wire for the PWM I would be very surprised if your board could not set it to voltage control (may be called legacy), but if you can't hear it over the case fans anyway its not a real issue if it runs full speed anyway :)

It does depend on the motherboard webby some can some cannot.
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
I know what all the pins are for but as far as I know, only the CPU fan can be speed controlled, and that's only by PWM even though there's another 4 pin header on the board? Maybe with a BIOS update?
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
Or you can try using speedfan or a similar application to change fan speeds.
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
Sure the Load temps are correct??
Never seen load temps the same as Idle.
Re: Ultima 90 install + temps
Would that work? Maybe an updated BIOS would support it directly?

Yes they are correct, it's just that the temps are below the minimum temps that the sensor can detect lol.
Edit: can somebody confirm that this is normal with an E7200 at stock speeds? I don't think the sensor is stuck because it did rise a little as you can see on the OCCT graphs, plus it read 10C higher with the stock cooler.
