Shuttle barebones
Don't get me wrong I love my Akasa Omega, im just tired of lugging massive cases around nowa days, to and from uni etc.
I dont want a laptop 'cos well they don't do 24" laptops.
Why are these so expensive? Its just a small plastic case, a motherboard and a low power PSU.
Because I game id want something that could support a Q6600, power my HD 4850 and prolly something more when I have more cash, fit in my 4gb of RAM, fit my PCI-E Wifi card in, has a lots of USB ports and SATA ports.
But the cost of like a SX48P2 or SX38P2 models which unless im missing a model or summin is the only one that would meet my needs is huge. £350+ is alot of money for a ok motherboard, a small shell of plastic and metal and a low power PSU.
Would I be better of just buying a mATX motherboard and chucking it all into a small case? Silverstone SUGO maybe? But is it too big for my likin i think it may be.
I really like the look of shuttle and the idea of just carrying it around to my mates or summin in basically the palm of my hand (yes I have hands the size of a giants) I really like.

Re: Shuttle barebones
Based on your specs I would want something more custom in terms of cooling and air flow.
OCUK do a cheapish shuttle box, £230.
Check out the Asus T3 though and pob's thread on the same subject.

Re: Shuttle barebones
The Shuttle XPC SP35P2 is a good buy at that price. fans can be a little noisy and you can add 2 or HD as you wish. Check the shuttle site for list of compatible hardware. Hope this helps.

Re: Shuttle barebones
That SP35P2 would suit my needs.
Now I would just need to sell a case, PSU an motherboard before I go to uni which is Friday or Sunday. Hmmm...

Re: Shuttle barebones
Lol I've looked into this before and given up. But mine was staying at home so I can see why you want to.

Re: Shuttle barebones
Yea, I like havin big case to work in and stuff but I hardly upgrade my PC now 'cos I have now need and its just a pain transporting.
Cooling the ole graphics card wouldn't be a problem cos ive got a Akasa Vortexx Neo on that, CPU is my biggest worry really. Would have to find something small enough to fit in the case but good enough to cool it, apart from the stock cooler.

Re: Shuttle barebones
I have the earlier SD37P2 and it is easy to move around if you get the matching carry case. They are a bit noisy when the fans ramp up. However you can replace the existing fans with something like Noctua fans. I use the Akasa Vortexx Neo to cool my HD3870 and it fits fine in the case.
The two main problems with Shuttles are:
1.)They are very, very, very picky about what RAM they can work with.
2.)The motherboards are very, very difficult to get hold of and are very expensive when you can.
However when you get it up and running the compact size really is a boon especially when you need to move your computer during the holidays!! :)
I would check the official Shuttle compatibility lists before any build. The SFFTech forums are the main Shuttle forums on the internet and they are very useful too!

Re: Shuttle barebones
Thanks CAT-THE-FIFTH :D
Only problem is that it isnt on offer at OcUK any more and the price has gone up. :(

Re: Shuttle barebones
I have the SX38P2 Pro and I will say if you are wanting to run a dual slot graphics card you won't get the pci wifi card in there as there are only two slots and you obviously lose one of them due to the card. You would have to get a single slot card to get away with another pci card in there.
Other than that, they are picky with memory but mine takes the Corsair XMS2 stuff fine. You do get a bit of a heat issue, especially with mine as I have the gear squeezed in, there isn't any room between the PSU's and the likes of my 8800GTS.
Great machine though and being able to pick it up and lump it around makes up for the downsides of a machine that small.

Re: Shuttle barebones
Quick couple of notes about shuttles
We have a few at work namely SD30G2 and SG33G5 (it has the same front panel as that one)
They are both roughtly the same,
Steel & Aluminium frame, outter caseing is aluminium, the front is also aluminium, the sg33g5 is exposed the sd30g is covered with a sheet of purspex (with cutouts for drive bays and power&reset button.
What you pay for is custom case, custom motherboard, custom psu and custom cooling (both the models we have have the heat pipe tower cooler which is offset so it's directly over the rear case vent, so the cpu fan blows air over the cooler and stright out the back of the case, very nice set up :) )
They are very small, roughtly half the height of a micro tower case (eg antec nsk 3480), but still as long, ie slightly shorter length than a mid tower.
But I do agree they are rather pricey :( and there are problems and high costs involved with replaceing the motherboard or psu

Re: Shuttle barebones
OK cheers Pob. :)
Im looking at the Silverstone SG02B-F now as thats cheap and I could just buy a DFI JR P45 and put that in there as apparently id be able to fit my current Corsair PSU in the case. :)
More thninking is needed though.
