An example of shoddy Amazon packaging

    What's this? I don't remember ordering any CD's or DVD's from Amazon.co.uk.

    Fairly heavy too.............

That's right, Amazon in their infinite wisdom decided to send my new hard drive in a cardboard sleeve with just its anti-static bag for protection and some silica gel for company! Last time i got a HDD from scan it came in a protective plastic case and still Scan decided that it needed around 12 layers of bubble wrap, this is the way it should be done.

The drive works fine no thanks to the wonderful packaging, i wonder how many drives amazon gets returned due to this idiotic policy? Next time i'll play it safe and order from Scan again, even if its a few quid more.

O/T - The observant among you may have noticed that's a 4 year old Hitachi drive in there, its got the part playing my new WD Caviar Blue (which is excellent).

Got to love it when companies use their initiative with regards to packaging.

It really is a great drive though, quick and very quiet.

Re: An example of shoddy Amazon packaging

Gotta say, Scan has the second best packaging I've ever seen. (My case box just had a delivery sticker on it, and got a battering in City-Link's hands.)

Ebuyer is okay actually, had a HDD delivered in a box with enough packaging to wrap a 7ft basketball player!

Swings and roundabouts though, depends who packed it, and who delivers it.

Don't wince too much about that, my letterbox is at the bottom of the door. So about an inch fall.

Re: An example of shoddy Amazon packaging

That's really bad packaging for a hard drive

FYI Misco.co.uk ship them in a box with a sheet of foam below and above and a another surrounding them, this box is then put inside ether a bag if it''s only 1 or in a larger box with some bags of air if there's more than one or it's coming with other stuff.

Scan do go a bit ott with the bubble wrap but because it's fully wrapped it's better than at the bottom of a box with some chipping slung only on top like some do.

There's me thinking they were ok to a few G's worth of a drop if they can find that in the RM depot then hats of to them but I wouldn't be worried in the slightest if a HDD was posted to me like that, hell ive dropped a couple a few times and there still fine.

Yes - when the drives are parked (off) they are rated for some quite serious G shock these days.

The WDC Blue specifically can handle 300G for 2ms while not in use.

I'm sure someone far better at maths than me could work out the safe height this can be dropped from given that the drive is 630g.

Of course, this would be ignoring the padding that even the thin corogated cardboard is going to give. especially if it langed on a corner which is more likely than flat on the floor.

Although the packaging is pitiful, I would have to say that it is probably more than enough to not cause damage. Would be itneresting if you could get away with slapping a stamp on the bare anti-static bag and posting it that way

That's given me an idea, Maybe we should try to see how much distance a disk could travel via Royal mail with minimal packaging before it gets pronounced dead?
